playing the game to completion reduces your chance of purchase. I know there's a lot of games that I've sunk good hours into and decided, in the end, weren't so hot (most Bioware games, to be relevant to the topic). But you're not funding a spiritual experience; you're funding the man-hours that went into producing content. Basically, you're paying for the hours of gameplay, and once you've used 50 hours of the game, your final opinion of it is completely irrelevant as far as paying for what you've consumed.
Also, if a game isn't good, why the heck would you pay it to completion anyway? If a game is compelling enough to finish, then it's presumably "good" enough to buy.
The thing here is that you're assuming that if a person downloads a game they are going to play it to completion, which quite often is not the case (in my experience anyway). It's EXACTLY like a demo - if you don't like the game, you're not going to finish the thing nor go buy it. Yes there are people out there who will download it, enjoy it and never buy it but those people probably never planned on just demoing the game anyway.
Warezing games to demo them is a good idea (for games without demos). Example, I downloaded the new Alone in the Dark, played it for 30 minutes then deleted it because it was shithouse. However, I downloaded S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl, played it to about 50% completion and bought it to continue playing (which led to Clear Sky being an instabuy >.<) even though I still had the game on my pc ready to go.

Yeah, SubJeff, and Assassin's Creed 2 is coming out next month! I would go ahead and play the first one, see how well you get along with it. If you like it, move on to the sequel. If not, work on the aforementioned queue. Dragon Age will still be there after the holidays.

Oh God I forgot about AC2. Haven't finished 1 so may not like it, yeah.
What the hell are holidays?

Which is exactly what we were talking about - the cases where he was playing games to completion. No assumptions were made.
Also, I've heard PC Gamer UK is reliable, but frankly I never trust the press when it comes to Bioware. I'm not just talking about their faults in storytelling, either (though it's true the press seems to regard it as an objective truth that Bioware has the best writers in the business); Jade Empire got (generally) glowing reviews, and that game blew on just about every level. Like, Bioware games, for all their faults, are generally compelling. I finished KOTOR. I finished Mass Effect. Jade Empire, hot damn, I kept trying to pick it up and give it another chance, not realizing just how rushed it was. It wasn't even technically proficient - you could WALK THROUGH THE STORKS.

I know how SubJeff feels. Bioshock 2 getting postponed actually makes things easier for me this quarter. I've quite a lineup of games planned, including another runthrough of Deus Ex in November that I've been promising myself for years.

You're planning on getting BS2?
That's it, I'm breaking up with you and this time I frakking mean it
EvaUnit02 on 17/10/2009 at 23:48
Paying full price upon release for Bioshock 2? Yeah, dethtoll has gone off the deep end.
SubJeff on 18/10/2009 at 00:11

EvaUnit02 on 18/10/2009 at 00:39

I haven't actually preordered it yet. :erm: And I probably won't be buying it on release. But it's a definite buy because I can't help myself. Ken Levine not being involved is a big draw, admittedly.
