Because I never saw a game that cares on which OS the dosbox runs.
You forgot to mention you're on Linux and that's why Nameless Voice recommended the Windows program VDMSound to you.

Probably not. In how far does all of this help me running the game in a Linux Dosbox?
Download "SS Portable", which Zylon linked to and use that. Within the archive there should be a sub-directory with the CD version of the game sitting there ready to play within Dosbox, that's how I did it. Just ignore all of the VDMsound business, that's an archaic, long out-dated solution for Win2k/XP that had been superseded by Dosbox itself years ago.
I can't give you any specific instructions since my PC is currently in the shop being repaired and I'm stuck using a Macbook Pro. >_>

That's not quite true. It's true that DOSBox includes VDMSound, but SS1 still runs a lot faster in Windows XP's native DOS emulation mode, using VDMSound for audio.

If you want Dosbox to run a game faster increasing the number of cycles allocated usually does the trick. Changing the CPU core mode and virtual memory allocation can sometimes help too.

Unfortunately, my poor computer (E6320 @ 1.87GHz) just isn't fast enough to run SS1 in DosBOX at 1024x768. Not that surprising since no DOS machine at the time could possibly cope with that, so if I can only manage to emulate a 486-equivalent, it won't be able to run it.
Edit: I should add that it runs fine at 640x480.

OC that bitch. I had a E6400 @ 2.13GHz that would easily stably run at 3.08GHz.

I tried to copy the game files from SSP to Linux, but the dosbox just crashes.
