Dosbox is all very well, but a dedicated DOS PC is better...
It is NOW, but when consumer-level PCs get fast enough to emulate an old DOS PC at full speed, the advantage will become purely nostalgic.

For most DOS games I play, DOSBOX is already as good as a full DOS PC can get. Well, it's even better sometimes!

Even though my Athlon 3500 can run DOSBox easily fast enough to run SS1, I still prefer to use the 500MHz K6-2 I have lying around.
C'mon. It's the only exercise it gets these days. It's a waste of good hardware to leave it gathering dust in a corner for years...

I sold my 386DX (33MHZ) and Pentium1-100MHZ while I could. So Dosbox remains

Eh... I suppose a K6-2 is a very old piece of kit.
Since I got it for free only about a year ago, I've never been in a position to sell it.
Or the 550MHz P3 running my webserver.
Or the 200MHz Pentium I ripped out of my parents' old computer.
Or that 286 currently stored in a plastic bag somewhere in the box of hard disks.

Maybe I'll try it when replaying SS1. Does anyone know if this makes taking screenshots easier? As far as I remember it was a bit of a hassle to get to work.

Yeah, it's pretty easy to take screenshots with DOSBOX. (And to record sounds, too... :ebil: *sets various screams to windows action sounds*)

Hello. I managed to download DOSBox 0.58 and get it to run, but when I try to run System Shock (1) with it, it says
DOSBox does not run protected mode games!
Can someone tell me how to get it up and running?
Ajare on 24/3/2005 at 21:55
Yeah, slowdown is purely due to slow processor, nothing else. The only other game that gives me trouble in DosBox is Privateer (consarn it!).

The latest version is 0.63. (

You know, it's fairly easy to extract the sounds directly from SS1's resource files.
