I've been wanting a pause-time tactical squad-combat game set in the real world since I first played Frozen Synapse. JA:BIA came kinda close but was too fiddly to be much fun in the long run. So when Door Kickers(is that the gametitle of the year or what?) showed up my interest was immediately peaked. An hour ago I plonked down 8 bucks for pre-order + early Alpha access, and yep, this is pretty much it. This is the game I've been wanting for the past year and a half. More or less. My only critisism so far is that I can't have my guys strafe(like you could in FS), so I can't have them entering a room already aiming in a set direction. You can sorta get around it by just having your guys turn sideways as soon as they enter a room, or walk diagonally through the doorway but it's not an exact science. It feels like the interface has been kept minimalistic so porting to iPad will be simple. Still, even if it's not as involved as FS it's still good fun.
You can read about it further in the latest (
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/03/22/the-flare-path-killhouse-rules/) RPS Flare Path (be sure to check out the gorgeous new The Hunter screens as well while over there), or buy it from (
http://inthekillhouse.com/) KillHouse Games. If you buy right away you also get special privileges in saying what goes into the game. I'm gonna abuse my powers to make sure one of the CTs gets named Garrett Denton, and maybe at one point he'll make a crack about how it would be easier killing terrorists if he only had the bow upgrade. Or not.

What bugs me is how slow and clunky the character movement looks. Room clearing is a really fast, brutal affair, and what I love about Frozen Synapse is how it captures that feel perfectly. The game mechanics on this one might be solid but the SWAT operators shuffling at a walking pace, eyes and guns glued to their direction of travel and not even pausing to shoot, does not look very convincing.
I'll definitely give it a try if they release a demo but that video doesn't have me sold.

I gotta say that I'm getting tired of the alpha funding concept. Enthusiasm wanes for a project ages before it's even close to being finished. Kudos if it keeps OCD suffering consumers engaged though.

Tom Clancy: Rogue Spear is exactly this. Gameboy game, though, so dunno if it's available to you.
You control a team of four specialists with various skills, and do everything from recon, hostage rescue, bomb defusal, and terrorist assassination. Flashbangs are a lifesaver in that game.

Ooooh yeah, I seem to remember playing some Tom Clancy R6 game on my old Nokia N95 that played much like this as well. Too awkward controls on that phone to be much fun though.

Are you saying e.g. Minecraft would've ended up being a better game if they wouldn't have used alpha funding? I bought that one in the alpha stage too and felt I'd gotten my money's worth already then. If it means I have OCD because I wanna play an awesome thing
right now, rather than wait a year or two for a potentially even more awesome thing, then so be it.

Recorded a couple videos. Also figured out that you can strafe by holding RMB down to aim a unit in a certain direction. This only works on one unit at a time though.
This is level 1 and 2 completed with 3 star ratings(all hostiles killed+no casualties+within timelimit).

This second video perhaps gives a better idea of what the game is like. It's my first run through the final level of the alpha. Lost one of my guys right away and had to clear the whole level with only 1 unit.

As if I didn't have enough on my gaming-plate with System Shock 2, Trials Evo, Scott Pilgrim, FS, Leviathan Warships, Monaco, and Dirt 3. Those bastard DoorKickers devs just went and released Alpha 2!

I haven't played DK since the early alphas so I'm looking forward to digging into this. I gotta finish Outlast first tho, but I'll be kicking doors and posting impressions later in the week.
