But can you hug walls and do one-button-takedowns ;p

Meh, Doom II wasn't really very significant, was it?

For literally years my brother and I would run pirated copies of v1.666 that he downloaded off some BBS. It wasn't until 1999 when the source ports came out and they weren't compatible with v1.666 (which was some sort of leaked beta version of the game anyway) that lead me to finally buying a big boxed copy of the game on the cheap. It shipped with Doom95 which was source port made by GabeN at Microsoft that was helluva sh*t compared to the ones made by the community like ZDoom and Doom Legacy.

They recently updated the Steam versions of Doom 1 & 2 with a new source port. Frankly it's quite lame, very barebones. You're better off just sticking to a high quality community made one with probably 20+ years of development behind it, like GZdoom.

P.S. (
https://github.com/pa1nki113r/Project_Brutality) Project Brutality v3.0 (an expanded Brutal Doom mod) is incredible. Really gives classic Doom a new lease on life. I definitely recommend it, ignore June Gloom's purity test sperging about Brutal Doom and give it a go.

Getting ahead of this one before it blossoms.
Just stop. I don't give a fuck how many old grudges you're all nursing, This public airing of grievances bullshit needs to end.

ZDoom was my favorite of the source ports for the longest time. Is GZdoom the way to go now?
It's Zdoom but with hardware accelerated graphics. It's just the next natural progression really.
Meanwhile Bethesda's bum ass source port on Steam is software rendered. We've had hardware accelerated Doom since 1999, multi-billion dollar corporation needs to do better.

I vastly prefer software rendered doom & quake. The hardware rendered hard edges suck all the mood out of it. Pixels ftw.
Thankfully, GZDoom still has a software rendering option! Great port.
