I liked what I saw.
Sure, it might not have been "proper old-school Doom", but it does at least look like the best combination of Doom 1 & 2 and Doom 3 to me; the atmosphere and graphical fidelity (at the time) of Doom 3, mixed with the more fast-paced gameplay of classic Doom. Plus an added moveset for the player character. Seems like the closest to original Doom one can hope for from an AAA game in this day and age.
Plus, with this, how long till someone tries to recreate something similar to the maps from Doom 1 & 2?

The Snackmaps are pretty awesome, gotta admit.

If people want the old Doom games, they can play them. If people want the old Doom games in the new engine, they can petition for a TC project (assuming one doesn't already exist). Assuming that the team who worked on the original games aren't together and that the new team actually want to express some creativity and try to go forward rather than tread water, I'd say that this looks great.

It seems to have the speed of Doom 1/2, and the weapons have a sense of visceral impact. They got those parts right. But otherwise I'm not impressed with the gameplay demo.
The graphics, which used to be something of a specialty for id, look washed out, low contrast, with colored lighting run amok making the environments seem monochromatic; there seems to be over-use of fog effects, and like so many other games - too much bloom. The level of detail is modern, but the overall look reminds me of a bloomier and foggier Q3A. Seems like they put a lot of effort into the gore but it otherwise looks dated and lacking in atmosphere.
Another thing that has never been the same since the original Doom is the sound. The sounds of the enemies were so much a part of that game, and provided most of the intimidation factor. Doom 3 didn't quite deliver the goods in that respect. And this game doesn't seem to either. Also, the enemies in this demo seem rather dumb and the "puzzle" involving using the dead guy's hand on the scanner is cliche now.
I don't know if I'm up for another Doom game anyway. Nothing is going to recreate the feeling we had the first time we were charged by a demon, or heard the roar of the barons, or used a chainsaw as a weapon, or walked through a corridor of bloody bones.

They're making a game called "Doom", that seems like a big assumption to make.

Either those monsters look small or the map seems oversized. Yup, that's more like classic Doom and less Doom 3. :cheeky:

It's pitched as a re-boot, not a re-skin.

If the goal is to be creative and move forward there's literally an infinite number of things you could make. They're making Doom instead. And I think if you're going to limit yourself in that way, or rather let the executives and marketers at Zenimax limit you in that way, you might as well make a Doom game. I'm probably being too harsh on that gameplay video, as judging from what everyone's saying about it they're giving the fans what they want.

So Doom II will go down in history as the only non-(re)-boot of Doom?

It looks dull as all hell to me, but then, while I enjoyed the first three games, I suppose I've moved on from this sort of thing. Perhaps I'm no longer the target audience, but then - who is? This is clearly a nostalgia venture, but gaming has moved forward so much since then.
