Yes, damnit. I bet I'm gonna have to start selling my blood just to afford all these damn games coming out this year.

I watched most of the 4 hour stream and my impressions of the game have improved somewhat. On one hand, it looks very dull visually -- drab industrial environments that will probably start to feel very samey after a while. On the other hand, I like the fast paced mayhem in the gameplay. At its worst, it feels like the worst parts of Half-Life without all the meticulously crafted setpieces and encounters, but at its best it feels like a frantic music video and it actually looks fun. Maybe not 60$ worth of fun, but at least enough for a playthrough.

There was a sale on CDkeys for 31 EUR that almost made me buy it... Almost.

Okay, so I bought Doom. GreenManGaming had a 20% off voucher, so I took it.
...didn't even manage to make it to next week. :P
I should add that I'll be playing the game with the Steam Controller. Like here!

I honestly didn't think the game was going to be any good, and all signs seemed to be pointing to it. I thought it would be something like Doom 3 at best -- not exactly bad, but entirely forgettable. But I was wrong and I'm glad that I was.
I think it all boils down to one simple thing -- it's a Doom game. A modern Doom game with some substantial changes, but a Doom game nevertheless. It's fast, it's responsive, it's metal and it's gamey. Instead of blue flasks you get glowing health pickups, but the idea is the same -- you're in a level filled with demonic hellspawn and you need to run and dodge and blast away while managing your health and ammo and searching for hidden away goodies to top off your arsenal. And it seems to stick to that basic idea, for the most part. It doesn't keep you away from the action with overly long cutscenes and it doesn't skimp on neither weapons nor enemies.
Now, all that said, it still locks you in barely interactive Half-Life style cutscenes occasionally, the levels feel kind of smallish, and the art direction still rubs me the wrong way somewhat, but the fun parts are genuinely fun, as far as I'm concerned. Even the glory kills actually kind of work as a health pickup mechanic or at least they are not nearly as annoying as I thought they would be.

Gonna have to pick this up at some point. I'm seeing a lot of people pleasantly surprised at how it turned out.

Argh, I really want this one but am not convinced my Radeon 7850 + i7-2600k combo will be able to manage it without falling over.

It's a Doom game alright. I don't see many ways they could have got it more right.
