That is true, but I had to confront a walkthrough anyway. There's quite a few areas per hub and mentally memorizing where all of the closed doors are and even how to get to each level in each hub isn't the easiest if you aren't spending hours on it. With that said, the hub design was one of the main appeals of the game.

Okay, so we've spent a lot of time bitching about smart people, dumb people, and hubs, but has anyone actually played the game yet? Is the new Doom doomy enough to be called a new Doom?

While I've only finished the first three levels so far I'd say this feels worthy of the Doom name. The pacing is excellent and the combat is a blast and its exactly the kind of over the top violence and mindless fun that you'd expect to find in Doom. There's plenty of secrets hidden throughout the levels and I've already missed a ton of things based on the end mission stats. Regardless, I'm really digging this game which is great after the multiplayer beta was bit a of a let down. I've never been into deathmatch though when it comes to Doom and at least ID left the multiplayer to a third party developer so that they could devote the rest of their energies to the campaign. While Bethesda did not provide any early review copies of the game a few websites have posted a brief article on their early impressions of the game.

In the case of DOOM, I like not being able to jump around like a monkey, and instead rely on the lifts for vertical gameplay...When these elements are lost, part of DOOM's soul goes along with it.
I'm the complete opposite on this. It really irks me nowadays when there's no jumping in a first person game, even in something like The Witness where I understand fully why it has to be like that. I'm always put off by a knee-high obstacle blocking my path, especially if it's something like a low railing or a huge open window. So for me the lack of jumping is an unnecessary limitation on player movement rather than an essential part of Doom.

Just got to the first Hell section. It's DOOM man. new & old. Aesthetically it gives a lot of Doom 3 vibe, but the gun play itself and pacing is excellent. The gore kills don't feel out of place, and neither do the glowy drops. They dont' last long in the game world, and you vacuum them up as soon as they drop anyway.
There are some spots of ammo scattered around levels, but the monsters don't drop loot very often. It basically boils down to this:
Gore Kill: Health drop
Chainsaw Kill: Ammo drop
Gun Kill: very small percentage that either will drop
The chainsaw requires fuel, and its an insta-kill if you use it, but you have to have enough fuel to kill the demon. All or nothing, if you don't have enough fuel for that demon, you can't activate it. Some may not like that, but it gives the chainsaw a very specific purpose. Killing the harder demons easily when you have fuel (which is rare), and as a tool for ammo mining. You don't get to carry tons of ammo, so this becomes pretty strategic. There's an upgrade system and fun little ludic elements that have never been present in a Doom game before. Earn in game currency to buy upgrades to your armor and weapons. There is no "reload," you have what you have and when you run out of bullets you switch weapons. But each gun has 2 secondary attachments. Each can be upgraded separately for different effects, and you switch between them with R instead of reloading. You have to unlock them by finding these little upgrade robots.
It's an easy system to get the hang of once you understand it, but not too complicated to make it try to be something it isn't. A straight up shooter.
The level design is great. The levels aren't particularly large, but they use all of the space within them, with a great deal of verticality. It has a slight platformer bent because of this, but it doesn't take away from the formula, I'd say it's a good addition. Think the HL2 mod Minerva, just a bit less dense.
If this were a novel I'd say it's being shown in 1st-person non-omniscient. I feel like the character knows whats going on, but I have no clue. It slowly lets you in on the story as you progress, and I'm having trouble deciding if it's a retcon, or a true sequel. It might be both, if that makes any sense. It also just STARTS. You click new game, choose a difficulty, and it just begins. No cutscenes, no exposition, you just are, and you need to kill stuff.
I am pleasantly surprised. It's not quite what I thought it would be.

I wish you'd all shut up about cool the game is now. I've already blown a ton of money on games already this year, and still have Blood and Wine to look forward to here in a couple of weeks. If I buy this, It'll push me over $200 spent this month alone.
Quit making me want to hurt my wallet.

Did you opt for some rehashed copypasta shite like Uncharted 4? Poor bastard.

I have to admit. I went to the dark side and got my key on gamesdeal, I know it's a horrible thing to do, and that I should be ashamed, but I'm a grad student. I have no money, and it saved me 30 bucks from the insanely high price.

Eh, you do what you gotta do. I'm so tempted right now, but I think I'm gonna hold back for a month or two before I commit.
...which means I'll probably get it next week sometime.

Probably for the best. You know Manky is due in a few months, right?
