Maybe it just doesn't play nice with console controls.
Perhaps so. Punching buttons on a keypad via right stick is clumsy compared to a mouse. To me anyway. But I've never been that handy with thumb sticks.

To me, Doom 3 is simply a Doom impostor overshadowed by Half-Life 2 in 2004. For the real thing, play Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal.

I'm so tempted buy Doom Eternal, but I think it's a bit too in your face for me really. The soundtracks to the new games is hnnnnnnggghhhh soooooo gooooood.

(More of a general comment on the game, not specifically a reply to the above.) Doom Eternal is very deceptive with its presentation with its gore, industrial soundtrack, etc. You can't switch your brain off when you play it, it's not Serious Sam in the slightest. It requires you to learn and master the ins and outs of the mechanics + the rock, paper, scissor tactics required to kill things.

Yeah, but it IS really in your face and it's so fast paced and has so many mechanics that it feels like juggling. It keeps your brain very active, yes, but it is overwhelming and exhausting. Small doses only. I did eventually finish it. It's decent. Not 2016 good, and I certainly wouldn't call it 'the real thing'. A big part of Doom for me is getting lost in mazelike levels with a sense of 'place outside of place'. DE's very linear levels don't have a shred of that.

Yeah, it just feels more like a bunch of Q3A levels linked together by corridors to me. Not really like DOOM levels at all. I get the entire focus of the game is in the combat, which is fine - it just doesn't suit my tastes as well.
