No, that's not what I was saying at all. :(
When you have a label for something you can separate it and distinguish it from another thing. If all you know is MAD SAD HAPPY TIRED then you aren't going to make any sort of nuanced distinction between PEEVED and FURIOUS, and so modification of response based on subjective severity of the stimulus becomes irrelevant / unimportant to the subject. In effect, since they don't make a point of differentiating between "slightly irritated" and "fucking rage" the behavioural response tends to err on the side of RAAAAAAARRRGHHHH!!!!
They're still gonna express themselves with violence, but hopefully with a more
appropriate intensity. Appropriate to their perception of the situation, obviously (kinda hard to change that one) but it's basically like giving people better tools with which to scope out the world within and without... Look at it like this: black and white TV with rabbit ears and a storm outside vs HDTV and a 72" flat panel.
To put it horribly simplistically.
Forgive me if I misunderstand, but are you saying that the difference is a matter of intensity? If so, isn't that the point of having a scale from strongly agree to strongly disagree?

Half Life 2 is a much better game.

I actually own the first Halo game, but I'm already angry before even playing, just because I'd have to play on the 'legendary' difficulty level due to my birthday :p

Sweet, thanks for the confirmation; I was hoping I understood properly.

I'm sure you'll make it through 15 minutes somehow. =P I just hope I get enough participants, since I need to graduate in...um... two weeks. O_o
As for the differences in words on the State Hostility Scale, it's interesting to note that all items are scored equally, save for a those which are reversed scored (they subtract from the total score, rather than add to it). So if you rated yourself '5' for "I feel Vexed", it would count just as much as a '5' on "I feel like I'm about to explode." All items are related to state hostility, so there is bound to be some overlap, but I expect a lot of development went into the scale to try to eliminate items which are essentially the same.

I sent you that thing.
Halo demo was mildly exciting, for some reason it seemed similar to Unreal 2 to me, but I didn;t finish it (and I played 30 minutes like I was supposed to - I ran around the beach too much).
Now if you asked me to play Need for Speed, that would be something different, I don't remember if I was swearing over any other game more than over Need for Speed. Not making challenge #60 for like 30th time... blech. Then I'd rate "I feel like banging on a table" with clear 5.

I fail to understand the difference between mad, furious, and enraged. Honestly, I don't know what significant results you can pull from what amounts to word games.
Simple. Everyone has different levels of anger. I have "mildly annoyed" (my default mood), "somewhat irritated", "pissed", "pissed right the fuck off," "defcon 5", and "talking to my parents".
Anyway already played the Halo series and I can tell you that they piss me right the fuck off by being so goddamned shitty. Pass.
Maybe you should've picked a different game. I would suggest maybe Plutonia Experiment (PLUTONIA.WAD out of Final Doom.) Difficult yet easy to run.

Thank you Rogue Keeper. Sadly, you were the only one to send in data so far. This leads me to think I need to rethink this experiment, since I sadly don't have any research grants to motivate people participating. =P I'm thinking that 30 minutes is too long to ask people to invest and the download of a 150mb demo is a bit too much trouble. I think ideally, the whole thing would take about 15 minutes for participants.

Um...not that one more person makes much of a difference, but I PMed you with my results yesterday.
