Certainly there are some parties that I'm late to. One of them is the world of mechanical keyboards - when I was a child, it was nearly "natural" to have one, but the world has kind of rediscovered them since the spread of cheaper membrane keyboards, a few years ago. Now I'm 'awaken' and excitedly discovering these mechanical ones for instance.
My question to you guys is - does your keyboard affect your Thief gaming experience? Do you have any keyboard preferences? Are mechanical and/or gaming keyboards better for Thief?
Does the type of mechanical keyboard switches ("clicky" blue, silent red, brown, etc) count to you when it comes to playing Thief?
What I'm sure about that a very low-end keyboard could really ruin Thief experience, but I'm unsure of the above, so I'd happily read your experiences, preferences.

For gaming, i prefer a mechanical keyboard with adjustable lighting behind the keys. A membrane keyboard with lighting behind the keys will work, too. The big thing for me isn't necessarily the membrane vs mechanical question. It's the size of the keyboard. Keys that are too close together (sorry undersized craptop) ruin even the best games.
Edit: Altho i do like the feedback? feel? of the mechanical keyboards better in general.

Bought an Acepha gaming keyboard. Lights up like a Pink Floyd concert but the click of the keys was annoying as hell. Great feel. I could type a novel with it no problem. But for Thief? No. I have a backlit Saitek that works a treat.

So far, I've only used rubber dome keyboards. Won't change in the near future. I have a Logitech G110 for 10 years now, and, it doesn't appear to be breaking down soon.
Think I'm over the times as well where I buy gear for the "gaming" tag on it, and pay 50 € more than I should. If the G110 stops working, I still have a Media Keyboard Elite lying around here, which I bought for 30 €.

I still use a PS/2 keyboard, there's just something about how it handles multiple key presses that I prefer when playing Thief, it's more fluid & the control level seems perfect for the game's movement. I have a few old HP/Compaq/etc ones, you can often get them for ~$25 on Amazon or less at local mom/pop computer stores. I made sure the AMD B550 mobo that I bought recently still has a PS/2 port since many don't anymore.
For a while I switched to a Das Keyboard with the Cherry MX Brown keys that are supposed to be among the least clack-y, mainly for the backlit feature that I love for playing in a dark room at night. But the PS/2 is still almost silent in comparison for gaming (but if you type away on it it makes noise), but more importantly for me, even though the multiple keypress thing is decent on the mechanical KB it's not as good.
Backlit PS/2 KBs are in the $350-500 range if you can find them, so my cheapskate solution was to mount a plug-in style nite light under my computer desk with an extension cord, and the desk has a sliding keyboard platform below, so it illuminates the KB just enough while creating a nice subdued but undistracting ambient glow for very minimal room lighting.

I much prefer the feel of my mechanical keyboard (it has Cherry Reds, and is still going strong despite being a few years old now). Though I did try a mechanical number pad with Cherry Browns and didn't like the feel so much. Not sure if it was the keys themselves, or just that they weren't greatly implemented in that pad?
However I can't say that moving to a mechanical keyboard had any specific effect on my Thief playing in particular. But hey, always generally nicer to have more pleasing peripherals.
I would say that moving to a MMO mouse was more noticeably beneficial. Easier to press keys 0-9 when they are on the side of the mouse, than having to reach across the keyboard.
