I have only played STALKER for about an hour since starting this thread. So not very far.
I went to retrieve some stash on the way out of the first map, and it turned out that the bandits in that area had respawned, so I killed them again*, walked for a bit longer, and then realised that this was really a waste of my limited gaming time, and that I was better off playing something a bit more casual.
So I dug out Chronicles of Riddick (which I've never played, despite beeing in my collection for years), and am giving that a go. It's by no means a better game then STALKER, but it does present me with a steady stream of "stuff to do", so it's more suitable for me at the moment.
*wasting almost 10 minutes in the process, because I was worried about one guy who was still alive and appearing on my radar every once in a while. But after doing a massive circle of the area I thought he was in (stopping periodically along the way), and still not seeing him, I got frustrated and moved straight towards him ... still didn't see him ... then in desperation I shot a corpse on the ground, and the red dot on my radar dissapeared.

Yeh that was him then. :D Wounded enemies still appear as red dots. Fooled me at the beginning too.

it's not that I never die, it's just that I never use as many resources to accomplish an objective as I gain by accomplishing it. So again: it's not really giving me that whole "surviving by the skin of my teeth" feeling.
Don't save! Use only the auto-saving between levels. As replaying a whole level is really annoying, you'll try to avoid dying at all cost, which means you will use your resources, which means you will get that "surviving feeling". At the very least, find a way to punish yourself for dying (with games where there is no clear levels, the trick I use is, when I die, to quit the game and wait for a few minutes before reloading).
Anyway, I'm playing this game now and I just reached the bar (and I agree with what other people said about that bar). Although the game has its flaws, although I also wasn't impressed at first, I even found it painful at times, I now WANT to play it. Which is really something to say for me because I generally don't like shooters.

I can't stand the protagonist of the CoR.

I appreciate the suggestion Papy, but that sort of hardcore play is hardly the thing I want to be doing when I don't have a lot of gaming time ...

Chade, I understand. SoC does require a lot of time. But to answer your question, yes, the game does get better. A lot better.
Minor spoiler here to give you an idea of what's ahead : You know all those stupid dogs you see in the beginning? Well, wait until you hear those dogs once more, thinking, "oh, not again those boring dogs" and you continue forward ignoring the barking. But then, after a few seconds, you see them... All of them... Charging directly toward you. And to make the party more fun, you see a few other mutants too, including a new one. Of course, you think it's no problem but... What the fuck this new mutant just did? Ok, no problem, time to run... but then you realize you're transporting too much weight and you can't run for long. Oh, shit!
