Well there's only one version of AMK unless you're russian.
The problem with aliVe was that all that camp changing really messed up some quests, i.e. you could get a quest to kill bandits at the Garbage, except Stalkers were there at the time - which means Stalkers got flagged and that's who you were supposed to kill. AFAIK they never managed to fix it.
Yeah, the auto-generated quests were stuffed. If you can call giving you the same thing to do over and over again can be called generation. But as they were one of the more tiresome bits of the game, I never minded.
AMK, there was quite a few patches and revisions. Whichever one I played it on, I'd get fights transmitted over the radio and occasionally get there in time to loot the bodies before anyone else did.

Had a problem with the mouse -- I think the intellimouse I'm using is either slightly malfunctioning or else the touchpad is interfering with it, but I can't get the sensitivity very high (on maximum in windows control panel it's usable, anything less is too slow) so to compensate I turned the sensitivity in Stalker to full. That's what's causing my 15-pixel mouse jumps. I turned sensitivity back down to normal, and though it's a bit slow now at least I can aim accurately.
I think a new mouse is in the near future.

The random stalker camps was neat but that was a mayor flaw (Hey guys seen some zombies here? Oh well ill just kill you instead), even worse when the "replacements" were faction aligned. Worst offender was the mercs in that first building in Rostok being replaced by Duty since one of them would effectively block the way in unless id made him move away by throwing a grenade near enough to scare him off but not as near as blowing him up. Pain in the ass

That would have been really cool without the blocking-off though, it was pretty boring how Duty would never take the two steps required to actually move into merc territory in-game even though technically they were supposed to go through Rostok and into Yantar all the damn time.

Just read some posts here, and want to add only this:
The Zone is by far the most living & breathing gameworld I've ever been to. Even more so in its quietest moments. The wind and trees come to life. The very air is a ghostly creature. A dead place? Never. The world of Shadow of the Colossus is a dead place. But that's designed and it's its appeal. Only Fallout is dead as in dead boring.

Whoa, dude, three strikes in one post? Slow down.

Well, I've given up ...
In the end it had nothing to do with perceived lack of depth or anything like that. It's just that when I get a few hours to play a game, and I know that I may not have another oppurtunity for a few weeeks, it's just unbearable to play a game where half the time is spent walking from place A to place B and not really doing anything in between.
The slow pace is appropriate for the desolate aesthetics of the game, but it's not so appropriate for my lifestyle atm.
...
So Koki: what were you saying about Tetris? :p

Buy lots of energy drinks or find moonlight/flash/sparkler artifacts and you can run forever.
How far did you get in the end?

Yep, W+X and a Moonshine equipped compensate absence of working vehicles pretty well ;)
