I love this game so I know you must be frustrated when it continuously crashes. I believe it is your ram that might be the problem, but I would...
"One thing you could try out is toning down the game's graphic scales and/or resolution. Just a suggestion. Should at least speed the game up if nothing else." (Gorgonseye).
If not...then I would recommend downloading some patches for the game...I haven't had to do this because I have a newer HP high end.
The one question I have for you is if you have ever cheated in the game. If so, that can contribute to the slowing of the game. When I first started playing the game, I found that cheating significantly slowed gameplay, especially with god mode. If you have, then the only thing I can recommend is either stop cheating while in the actual game, or, if this doesn't fix the problem, then the only thing you can do to speed up and stop crashing is to find the save which you started cheating, delete all the saves after that one, and start with the save that is before the one you started cheating on.
My final recommendation is to ask how many saves you have in your Oblivion Folder (either under My Docs or Program Files). If you have a tremendous amount of saves, I would recommend trying to move some to a USB Zip Drive or, if at all possible, delete some of them. When Oblivion is loading the game you first select to start from, it has to go through all the saves. This process is pretty fast if you have around 300-700. But if you have more than that, it might be slowing your gameplay from the start and crashing when you switch in your inventory.
These are only some recommendations. If these don't work, then I really don't know how to fix your problem. Hopefully, they will be helpful to you!!!

Thanks for the advice, my saves folder is under 70MB and I'm pretty sure the problem is not my ram since I recently overclocked my PC to 3.5GHz and ran an 8 hour torture test to check stability, found no errors. I've also just upgraded with another gig of ram, so I'll see if that changes much.
I don't use cheats heavily, though I sometimes change the stats of a character if, for example, I suddenly realise that mysticism is a major skill but I haven't used it enough to get a single increase in it, or I might change my birthsign upon realising that there is absolutely no way that the atronarch could ever be any good. I might have also spawned the odd item when running out of lockpicks at the most inconvenient time or accidently getting myself kicked out of a guild because I accidently grabbed the wrong item or whatever. I don't think I've used godmode more than once, which was for about a minute to get myself out of a badly saved situation.
Either way, I haven't played oblivion for a while now so I'm not too fussed. I dare say I'll come back to it some day, hopefully with less crashes.

There is no problem with your configuration :cheeky: the game just crashes a lot, it's the same for me and a couple of friends and we have totally different computers. Oblivion is not the only unstable game out there.

Oblivion crashed on exit for me a bit at the start, but I can't say I have had any problems with it for a long time.

There have been some crashes with my Xbox 360 version too. The game just freezes, and you need to reboot the console. They usually occur when my character is in some high place with a clear visibility to far away distances.
Most crashes have been while trekking around the The Colovian Highlands, but recently I got a crash in Shivering Isles too, again near the highest peaks of the realm.

I experienced crashes all the time when I had Codec Pack All in 1 x.x.x.x (version number in x). I uninstalled it and tried K-Lite Codec pack. After that I've only had few random crashes (mostly due to mods) :thumb:.

i play it on the xbox 360 as well and its crashed on me a few times when i'm entering shops or buildings...it only happens every once in awhile but it is annoying. also,i've played a total of 39 games on my 360 and this is the only one it crashes on. it really sucks considering its my favorite game!
