Ok, now I'm getting really pissed off with the hideous instability of Oblivion on my computer and I'm wondering whether it's just my spec/combination of mods or if it's this bad for everyone. In areas where I'm dying a lot I seem to consistently get two loads before the game crashes. If the loads are more spaced out then I can usually get a lot more of them in but getting under 10 seconds of play time before the game crashes just isn't fun. Granted I had saved with a spectral reaver running at me.
I also occasionally get crashes when I try to equip something in the inventory and very occasionally get a crash and an error message complaining that the memory at such and such address could not be read, something that I also had a couple of times with Quake 4.
I used to run Oblivion on a second hand X800XL with which I experienced random crashes and some buggy video. I think I eventually fried that card and now I'm running on an X800XT with a multitude of different crashes, though they aren't as frequent or random.
I'm running a 3 Ghz P4 Prescott, 1 GB Dual Channel DDR400 RAM, the X800XT and a couple of 200/250GB SATA HDDs.

If the comp is up to the task, it should work, now....I'm no computer expert, but if this continues, one thing you could try out is toning down the game's graphic scales and/or resolution. Just a suggestion. Should at least speed the game up if nothing else.

The game almost always crashes when I close it down but other than that it hasn't crashed a lot during gameplay...make sure you don't have conflicts with mods, I've had trouble with that.
Run anti-virus, test RAM with memtest (disk), search system with several spyware programs and shut down as many programs as possible to see if it makes any difference. You can also download a program like Orthos and coretemp to check if your temps become too high...Atitool for gfx-card.
And oh yeah, another GB ram for Oblivion will do good for performance.

Yeah, I've been thinking about getting another gig of RAM and I'm slightly suspicious of the RAM I've got at the moment. As for spyware/viruses I'm clean and I always tend to keep running processes down to a minimum, especially when playing a high end game. I've also tweaked XP quite a bit, disabled a lot of the services etc.
As for mods, the one which is most likely to be causing problems is OOO and if I disable that then, well, I might as well go and play half life.

I seemed to get crashes when running my AV software at the same time, though more recently that problem seems to have resolved itself.

I occasionally get a random CTD. At the end of each game however I get an error message but I suppose that's not a problem since I've exited the game anyway...

You mentioned that you fried your old video card. Do you overclock?

Nope.

I have a similar problem. I've attributed it to the mass amount of mods I have installed, specifically tweaks and graphical updates. I also had a lot of trouble with my own Radeon card (a puny x850xt PE...) -- really, the best advice here is to mess with your graphics settings and remove your mods.

in the 187 hrs i have played, i have had one crash. also my game is unpatched
running at 1680 x 1050 using an 4400 X2/ 2g of corsair xms & a bfg 7900gt (XP) your current hardware seems to be more than capable.
reseat your current mem, another stick will def help & ensure your card has the latest drivers. good luck. oh & make sure your not having a heat problem (bad fan ?)
