I agree that Thief music is great, it gives such a moody ambiance to the games, sort of a sense of dark gothic adventure, mystery and danger. =)
I have the Thief and Thief 2 soundtracks, which pieces of music are the ones that you like to listen to on loop so much, Kristijonas? And Darkness_Falls, what is this "second floor ambient" you are referring to? Thanks for any info. =)

As far as I know, all the sound in Thief was by Brosius.
hahaha except for the choice clips that were nabbed from previous games and repurposed. Keep in mind also, that repurposed stock sounds were also used for some of the clips. The sfx folder in Thief is a trove of wonders, and I too, have not only listened to all of these ambients for many thousands of hours, but have rearranged, repurposed, created entire albums using these clips as well as clips from the other late 1990's crpgs. :)

Any specific examples (from Thief), or should we just take your word for it?

Oh sure, but then you would hafta buy and play the games I mention! lol
Here is some bait for ya though, Taffer. The churchbell is taken straight from Might Magic 6, which in turn was a modified stock sound effect. They thought the MM edit was sufficient. One of the food chewing sounds is also taken from the same game. I do have my master list somewhere, but I would never dig it out for something as trivial as a response to your post. And MM6 also borrowed key sounds from previous rpgs, including their own! Welcome to classic crpg game design. :)

Agreed :)
In the first mission of T2, if you go into the Kitchen of the main floor and then stand at the base of the stairs (by the fireplace) leading up to the 2nd floor, ambient music begins and then continues as you go up the stairs and traverse the upper floors. That's the ambient I was referring to :D
I also love that there is no ambient music for the first floor of the mission, and then it kicks in for the upper floors. It's a nice form of audio texture. Adding the droning ambient gives a different yet complementary vibe to the mission, imo

I don't see it in my soundtrack list, I guess because it's not part of the soundtrack music per se. Is there some place that has the Thief ambient sounds where one can figure out which is which? I'd like to hear this background ambient sound. =)

Well then!
If you own Thief:The Dark Project (Gold, and 2 as well), there is a folder in the install that holds all of the .crf files. Those are basically zip files. Find snd.crf and unzip it. It is the main sfx folder. You can also unzip every other sound and all vocals.
Enjoy Taffer!!!

Ah, I see, thanks. =) Will winrar unzip those game files the same as any standard .zip file?

Yes.

It would have been nice if Thief 2014 (NuThief®) had a Thief-like soundtrack, then this conversation might be moot ;) So, to clarify, by "Thief-like," I'm referring to Thief 1 and 2... in case anyone ever comes across similar work by Brosius, Djawadi, or anyone.
Thanks for the reminder on that, Goldmoon! Totally forgot about that pro tip.
I still wonder what Paul Weir's soundtrack would have sounded like if he had stayed for the duration of Thief 2014's development. I was intrigued by his old presentation talking about generative audio, as it had glimmers of aural hope.
Speaking of Mr. Weir, I stumbled on this tonight, which may or may not have been posted here before. An interview with him discussing his work for No Man's Sky:

I'm afraid I haven't listened to it all yet, just a couple minutes so far and will have to resume a different day. For now, the only reference to Thief 2014 I've heard is him saying he resigned from Eidos Montreal at about 01m:20s mark. I've never played No Man's Sky, and didn't know he worked on the audio for it.
I found out about the interview from a September 2nd post on his Twitter account: (
