I'm also getting many phishing attempts posing as eBay security - I know they are not valid because
a) My eBay account does not use my hotmail account
b) My eBay account has been terminated for about 2 years due to some funny business.
Thats nothing, I get ebay phishing attempts also. I know they are not valid because:
A) I've never ever had an Ebay account.

My Hotmail also gets a ton of spam, and considering that electrons are nigh-weightless, that's a lot. Fortunately I have my spam filter set on Exclusive so I never see any of it.
Don
just looking for an excuse to use the word "nigh."

I have 7 e-mail account they each get over 400 e-mail spam a day, either some one trying to get my credit card number for a credit card company I dont belong to. Or on-line drugs of which half are illegal in the uk, or e-bay spam for an account I dont have. One of e-mail account I've never used so the ISP who owns the server the e-mail is on must have sold the e-mail address to the advertising companies and gits that send you spam.

It's doubtful they would do that since they would have to deal with the spam that came in for that particular address. Spam is a major headache for administrators as well as individual users.
I would imagine spammers use random username generators, a bit like a brute force password hack attempt and that's more likely to be what happenend with your unused e-mail account. If they do this for the reply-to address as well then it increases delivery even further, even if it's effectively a bounce.
E-mail usernames are also limited to what types of characters they can use as well, so they won't be using the full ASCII range.

I use gmail. Therefore google scans my intimate personal emails and places advertisments (if i want them that is) all around the sides of my gmail inbox.
It then sends out these ads to spam emailers who fire off hundreds of shite emails about penis enlargement (ha!), hair growth (haha!) and breast reduction surgery (hahaha!).
Luckily though gmail has a folder where all this gets sent to, keeping my inbox clear until such time as I open the spam folder and delete the 120,000,000 items in it.
Such is the wonderful circle of life that is gmail.

So like 6 lines to tell us gmail has a spam folder. Yeah hotmail has one too, and has had problems working recently as well.

My account seems to be failing to filter so much frigging spam and missclassifies my legit mail as spam  I checked my account after one week absence and had to trawl through tons of spam to rescue the positive ones. And its largely for getting cheap viagra, prozac and valium from second world countries, or necessit une pene mas grande or and this all the time, from some sexually deprived housewife promising me the best sex I'll ever have. When nature decides to turn off male reproductive juices and pills can reverse that think of the monstrosities born to old geezers who will not be able to raise them. Outrageous. I hat false positives. I'm going gmail i think.
