My old comcast account recieved some spam recently, where the subject line was random excerpts from Cryptonomicon...I don't know HOW they know I read that and where they got the text but it was kind of cool.

I have been getting much more hotmail spam than before too, and curiously most of it is trying to sell Rolex watches.
Herbal Viagra doesn't get a look in any more.

I haven't gotten crazy nigerian penis enlargement spams, but I have noticed that no matter how often I tag e-mails from iTunes and Target.com (this one's particularly annoying, because I KNOW I never entered my e-mail the one time I browsed Target's website) as junk, they still go to my in-box. And this has been going on for about a year or so.

I'm also getting many phishing attempts posing as eBay security - I know they are not valid because
a) My eBay account does not use my hotmail account
b) My eBay account has been terminated for about 2 years due to some funny business.

I've had my first 419 mail this week. Never had any spam messages on my private accounts.

Are they image spam? Recently there has been a huge uptake in spam that is just a single image containing text. It is very hard for spam filters to block these as they all tend to look for patterns, yet the spammers generate random background colours, font colours, font sizes, font types, positions etc so each mail ends up like a snowflake - unique.
I don't see why they couldn't just check whether the email is a single image with no other content. There can't be many legitimate emails like that.

You're wrong. I get a number of legit emails like that every month. It seems to be the favourite format of IT distributors and companies like Zyxel, Symantec and VMWare.

Two of the three Hotmail accounts I have have indeed received lots lots lots of spam lately. When I think about it I'd say the spam filter started going kaboom around the time they launched the beta of Live Mail, or whatever it is called (the service that will replace Hotmail)
I don't know if it's related, but I'm quite sure both started at about the same time.

I'm using Yahoo, not Hotmail, but I have also been getting strange amounts of junk into my inbox. It ain't a big number of junk mail that goes there, but it is annoying none the less.
My spam filter still does a good job of cathing 20 - 40 junk mails each day though. :p:cheeky:
