Oh sure. Much easier with a gleaming razor in your hand.
You might try shaving your cats first. Just for practice.

Bah, ya'll are a bunch of sissies. I once shaved on the way to a job interview with a Swiss Army knife, in a moving car (my brother was driving, not me).
And no, I'm not making that up. Although admitedly my facial hair was a lot lighter back then. I haven't taken the straight razor plunge yet myself, although I've been thinking about it. Damn MachIII blades are freaking expensive. Being a knife collector, I'm probably less nervous around sharp blades than most people. I routinely shave away bits of arm and leg hairs to test sharpness of my knives. I can shave facial hair with some of my thinner-ground pocket knives, it's nowhere near as thin (or acutely sharpened) as a true razor, so it's more painful than it's worth (from tugging the hairs, not from actually cutting myself).

No, see, that's where good old-fashioned male domination comes in.
From anyone else, I'd think that was a joke. :p

Ok, this deserves some sort of award.

There's no way I would use a straight razor, you could easily cut yourself badly. Most likely you would need a steady hand at all times. I've only seen barbers use them. That cold sharp steel against your skin is an odd feeling. Sure it'll save money but disposable razors are cheap anyways, so why bother.

I've had a straight razor for years, haven't used it yet. I'm fucking terrified of it. :D

I should mention again to check out (
www.bladeforums.com) , specifically the "Razors, Scissors, Trimmers & Personal Grooming Accessories" room. You'll have to register to view the forum fully, search, etc, but it's free.

I inherited my Granddads cut throat razor, used if for a while but the constant stropping gets to be a real bind. Maybe I'll get it out of the box again. Thing is to it justice you have to have the soap bowl and badger bristle brush and of course the steamed towel to finish.

Trying to climb Mount Macho, eh Brian? I've used both a straight razor and an antique Gillette safety razor. The straight razor is a demanding master; wield it with a deft hand, and it rewards you with the smoothest finish (you are essentially exfoliating the topmost layer of skin along with the stubble). "Practice makes perfect", as the saying goes, but keep in mind that your face will be on the receiving end of some very
sharp mistakes. Give it a go, but keep the thing well honed at all times!
Macho? Actually it was more a case of historical interest. ;)
What you say is pretty much what I've read elsewhere, that is if done properly it will give probably the best shave possible, but it requires a lot of practice.
Frankly though I'm starting to chicken out after reading about straight razors!
