As far as anti-malware goes, I also recommend a-squared. It's slow, but tends to catch stuff Spybot and Ad-Aware don't. And it's totally free, yay.
Tweakguide's Windows XP tweakguide has a good list of free products.
Just how many resources does a firewall take up? Is Windows Firewall not a real firewall?
I've had no bad experiences with system security until my eBay account was recently taken over (thankfully, eBay got them within 7 minutes of them placing their last auction and refunded me all the fees they incurred). Now I'm a little more eager to get active protection.

The Windows SP2 firewall isn't very strict on internet access - it's only ever complained about a few multiplayer games. It's also a windows component and thus almost a standard for trojans to disable. It stealths <s>all</s> some of your ports though, which would make you <s>a lot</s> fractionally less vulnerable to port scans.

I'm having much fun with that Samurize thing... any chance you'd add a forum feed to the server, David? Top thread title from each forum, number of users online, average posts per minute...
