I think the fact that sales for TDS were Godawful from the get go (there just aren't enough of us taffers out there and one can only buy so many copies of TDS ya know :erg:
There are still Thief fans who haven't bought the game because they just don't want to ruin their previous experiences, as they really didn't like what they were seeing in the weeks leading up to release. All the things that were kept quiet until near the release, loading zones..rope arrows...no working water, they all added up to a lot of Thief fans speaking out with their wallets. I bought a copy, but I can relate to those who didn't. In hindsight, I wish I had of waited until the game was cheaper before I bought it as I didn't particularly enjoy it.
That being said, perhaps Irrational Studios would like to use their Bioshock engine to make an official Thief 4. Heh. I trust that Levine and company could make Thief the way it was always meant to be, they've got some old LGS staffers, and their approach for Bioshock has been a good one. The PC will have a separate User Interface than the console...TDS could have used those finer touches.

I've been thinking about that for some time. Ken could write a story that would be perfect for the Thief IV. Of course, it would have to be centered around the past, as there hasn't been any word from the old city in several years now. It would be good to see Garrett mucking around in his past though. Since Ken would only do this for the true spirit of gaming and not money, it would have to be a PC only title.

at this point i'd like to speak out in favour of thief 3. and i'll explain why.
thief 3 is what got me to play thief in the first place. i missed out on the series when it first came out 'cuz i was too broke, and when thief 3 first came out, i was like "meh." but then i read some webcomic guy's review of the title (as he was a long-time fan) and some of the stuff he mentioned made me say "... that sounds COOL!"
but i didn't want to play the games out of order. i quickly (and suprisingly easily) found a copy of thief gold, and the trouble i had getting it running led me here, and despite some peoples' wishes i haven't gone away yet :thumb:
anyway i got thief gold running, and now i am absolutely hooked and have been for 3 years now.
the way i see it, thief 3 isn't as good as the other two games, but i can appreciate the game for what it is, not what it was promised to be. and what it is is still a fuck of a lot better than splinter cell.

Except now Irrational is 2k, and we don't know what (if anything) will change because of that (good or ill)
Plus isn't that the exact same optimism we had for Thief 3? Just swap out Irrational and Levine for Ion Storm and Spector.

Levine (or Spector, or whoever) can be the greatest genius of electronic entertainment in the whole damn world, and he still may be unable to get anywhere, because he's not funding his projects from with own wallet. The people with money always have the last word. If they want a Thief with BFG 11k added, and Hammerites replaced with zebras, they'll get it. If Levine (or Spector, or whoever) refuses to comply, he'll just get fired (or his company will lose contract, or whatever). Sometimes someone can't take it anymore and leaves the company with a lot of fuss, but if anybody thinks their bosses will take the hint, they are gravely mistaken. Your boss is always going to think you're leaving, because you're stupid, and you are ungrateful for the job you were graciously given, and you don't appreciate the value of work and business, and can't you see we cannot be wrong because we've made so much money so far?

I would like to start a petition for not making a Thief 4. No one should make a Thief 4 - ever. "Be gone, lout!"
Dia on 11/8/2007 at 15:24
I'm almost inclined to agree with qolelis. After the TDS fiasco, I cringe to think what the devs might do to a Thief 4.

I think what we should do, as a community, is
rise up and SLAY Eidos
... Mind you this is both HYPOTHETICAL and just an IDEA... What we could do is gather up our programming, modeling, whatever, talent together and make a community Thief 4. That way, its made right, or rather, the way the fans want it.
Remember, what I just said was an idea and is completely hypothetical. Dont get on me because i suggested something "stupid", or "impossible." All im doing is giving the option that would best suit everyone, nothin more.
excuse the "spoiler text", i cant get this damn strike-thru thing to fuggin work!

The trilogy has come to its end. The circle is complete. Taking off from there risks being just the same thing all over again.
Money-makers are strongly advised to let Garrett rest in peace. In fact, they should let the whole Thief-universe rest in peace. Instead, I would like to see something replacing Thief. Possibly something completely different, but with the same great atmosphere and mystery that Thief has, coupled with an emphasis on the choices and consequences offered.

What about a remake of TDS?
