From what I've read, it's going to be a game of hit & fade, rather than FPP sneaker. Simply put, there may turn out to be no shadow mechanics.
I think you're right but did you see that rooftop & climbing action, reminded me of Thief but in broad daylight, cool.
I’m hoping if they decide to make a PC version of this it can be modded to be more like Thief.
Oblivion is a good candidate for a total conversion also, it already has several Thief type mods for it.

Hey a total conversion mod to create thief-like FMs...that's a good idea! ;)

I'm guessing there are still folks who have no idea about (
http://www.thedarkmod.com) Dark Mod yet?

It's a mod for what will be a severely dated engine when released in around 2010. Your point is?

er and we have all been and still play T1/T2 which is a 10 year old engine...
So your point is oxymoron..

I doubt the doom 3 engine won't still be a good enough engine for the dark mod since it presents some pretty neat visuals that will probably still be neat even after 3 years (so what if it doesn't have hdr? it has plenty of shadows and that's what counts if you ask me). plus, in 3 years, who knows, maybe we'll have pc's that will run the whole at a "not so decent" :P resolution of 1600 x 1400 whit AA, Anisotropic filtering, every effect maxed out AND have a texture improvement patch :) (yeah, I'd like seeing that...:D )

Am I the only one that was actually excited about Ion Storm's plans for Thief 4? The modern take on Thief world and all.
For a long time I detested the idea of City in modern time, scale and look, but I hadn't realised that I infact hated the supposed incongruency of steampunk magic with modern instead of a modern-based Thief game. Then it dawned on me how well all the factions would work as secret societies and how, instead of a Splinter Cell copy including indrustial espionage and loopy gadgets, the game could be about well-planned heists and slow descend into the sociopolitical undercurrents of the metropolis.
Keepers as self-titled secret police, Hammers as an old religion turned wannabe-world leaders and tv-missionaries bent on total domination through networks and graft and Pagans as a radical cult spreading through the slums and crevices under the soaring skyscrapers, hoping to topple the new order through guerilla tactics, hackers and constant conversion of the poorest classes, etc.
Could have been grand.

Sure, the setting would work. We already know it would, because noir was invented, like, seventy years ago, and conspiracy theme is ages old.
The game mechanics are a different matter, though.
"Thief modern" was one of first ideas that occured to me after finishing TDP for the first time. It haunted me for some time, but in the end the conclusion was - no can do. Of course, I'm not an LGS-class developer, and back then it was before computer games became my profession. But even today I believe it would require lots and lots of reworking, at best.
With a bit of luck and a good publisher, Ion Storm would have done it right, certainly. They did make "Deus Ex", after all. It would be a good game, and I'm sure everyone would enjoy it, once they got over it being "too different". But, in terms of gameplay, it wouldn't be "Thief" anymore.
I hope someone makes a "Thief modern" one day. But I'd also like another "Thief proper".

I would really prefer Thief be left alone by modern developers...unless Irrational took over.

FFS. You have no sweet clue what you are talking about. How many times do we have to have this same discussion? There are Mods...and then there are Total Conversions. Mods are limited and stick pretty close to the original engine...either by design, or necessity due to lack of access to the source code. TDM is a total conversion...and the SDK gives us access to most of the D3 engine. The engine is also going to go open source in another year or two. The only way that it will become dated is if nobody lifts a finger to keep it up to date. Even with the limited source code access available in the Doom 3 SDK, we've already updated a lot. The
GAME Doom 3 will be severely outdated by the time TDM is released, the
ENGINE will not. I mean, we've already updated the sound engine, rewritten the AI...and a host of other things. The engine we're working with now, is far from what we started with. Think outside the box.

Nah, it's just a game, not a holy scripture. It's not like it can be profaned, or something. The worst thing that can happen, is that someone makes a poor game. Previous parts won't get any worse because of that.
