I rarely block, but I find it useful when fighting Haunts face to face. Guards I can just hit - retreat - repeat, and almost never get hit. Haunts on the other hand are insanely fast, and when I'm cornered it can come in handy. It's not 100% reliable though (as it shouldn't be)

I use the sword block especially while fighting Tree Beasts. That is if I have to fight them.
It's also can be fun to hear what the guards say when you keep blocking them whether they're in a group or by themselves.

Speaking of archers, am I wrong in thinking that in OldDark T1 they would pull out swords if you got to close, and only became permanent archers in T2?

I've used it to the point where I can take 25 hits from a zombie or a hammerite and take 0 damage. Yes, I use it...a ton.
