There's irony here. I'm not calling it mindless because I dislike it. I dislike it because it IS mindless (in gameplay).
Yes, but you're also slinging a lot of elitism around any time anyone expresses any favourable opinion of games you dislike. It's not exactly a mark of great character.
If you want a discussion, hear people's opinions, don't throw the trite old elitism around as if it's some kind of astute outlook on the medium.

Both Doom and Doom 3 are pretty mindless. That's part of why they're fun.
Doom demands constant brainwork (navigation, combat, puzzles), even if it isn't that demanding. The gameplay content that is there expects some constant input from the player, when Ass Creed and other such titles demand very little through semi-automated gameplay, objective markers and the like.

Also dude, saying things like "Ass Creed" all the time, well, it makes you look a little... juvenile.
To summarise:
There is no such thing as a golden age of gaming.
GMDX Dev is right and everyone who disagrees with him is wrong and in all likelihood a poopyhead.
I like bacon. Why aren't there more games about bacon?
Mmmmm, bacon.

No, I've let many what I perceive to be unfavorable opinions be.

Who says that was what I wanted? I quite clearly barged in to "tell it how it is". That is it has all gone to shit. I made a mod over the course of three years in-part precisely for this reason: because the modern tripe wasn't fulfilling my desires, and to remind how it's done.

If that is your conclusion based on some harmless wordplay, so be it. I'm a gamer whining about having my toys taken from me, that's more juvenile than anything else here. And I'm probably half the age of a lot of you here anyhow.

Your first and second responses contradict each other. You seem to have set up a thread just to be all didactic and condescending. The title is misleading since it is phrased as a question.
Just because you are making a good mod for a game beloved in the forums, doesn't give you some kind of badge of authority to "tell it how it is".

Thank you for "telling it how it is" and taking the time to educate the unwashed masses and deliver them from this quagmire of self-deception. I'm just a little hazy about the next steps of our journey though and I'm afraid that with my current backlog I'm going to find it difficult to fit into this narrow church. Should we throw away our modern catalogue and go back to 90s games, your mod or something else?

They do not contradict each other. I have let many opinions be, and I have told it how it is (regarding the topic of the thread).

I was not using it as a badge of authority, I was simply using it to emphasize how strongly I feel on the subject.

I don't believe specific people here are unwashed or uneducated. I just think they're failing to perceive the painfully obvious.
Anyhow, I have rained in on your parade, and I don't wish to take this any further. I'll be more respectful of opposing opinions on the matter if discussion is to continue.

I completely understand what you guys are saying re: Doom vs Doom 3. With that said, my experience as a player was that they both required an equal amount of creativity and brainpower (that is, next to none).
The bottom line is, if you don't like objective markers and such, most modern games let you turn them off. I always do. So what's the big deal?
And despite the fact that I generally turn them off, I no longer have the gaming time as an adult that allows me to be lost in a level for hours with no idea where I'm going, so I don't know that 'handholding' designs are bad if you have a life and a job and friends and other hobbies and stuff.
I've never played an Assassin's Creed game, but if you're looking to use your brain why not play an RTS or something?
To me it's all kind of a moot point, because for the most part gaming as a medium has failed to reach the same artistic level as film, music or literature (with a few exceptions of course), so I'm not interested in which past era is better - I'm interested in how gaming as a whole is going to evolve and transcend a lot of its nonsense.
Nameless Voice on 11/12/2015 at 03:04
I think there's different levels of "handholding".
A lot of older games, for example, would have a journal that you could choose to consult to remember what to do next.
These days, games tend to always show you or tell you exactly where you are meant to go next.
The difference being, the former allows you to choose to look for a hint as to what to do next, while the second gives you the hint before you want it, and therefore doesn't give you the choice not to use it / to think for yourself.
