At a very basic level, one could argue that the very definition of a game is changing the state of something through interaction.
Indeed, and in what is commonly accepted as "non-games" there is not a complete absence of interactivity either. You control a character, move around the game world, read notes and can pick up objects if you're lucky.
I've chosen to apply the term broadly to all games featuring "gameplay" that does not engage the player as a result of automation as well as lopsided game rules in extreme favor of the player. It's use in this context is fitting in my eyes...well, it's probably derogatory to
actual "non-games" really, as those are not trying to be anything else but non-games. Anyhow yes, I'll return to simply calling those "mindless games" to separate the two.

It was quite a distinct smell and must have been the type of plastic that they used back then.
Those sticks really do have a distinct smell.
I wish favslist would have yearly best-of gaming lists going back earlier than 1985. This thread reminded me to check mine, and I have 10 games listed for 85 through 87, 9 for 88 and 89, 6 for 1990, 9 for 1991, then it dips all the way down to 2 for 1992 and doesn't get back above 4 until 1998, when it hits 10 again and holds steady through 2013 except for a small dip down to 9 in 2004. Looking at the actual lists, I'm including some incredibly borderline stuff too like Baseball Stars 2, Wolf 3D, and Doom, none of which would crack a top 200 games of all time list for me.

Speaking of those original joysticks, I only have one working one left. When we have people over for New Years we always break out the C64 for retro gaming and this year I'm a joystick short.
Can anybody suggest a good replacement? I would rather not take a chance on a used item left over from the 80s because these things wear out. There are some clones being produced now, but the user reviews say they are junk.

I'm pretty sure that when Manwe uses it, he's referring to things like Dear Esther. Walking sims, that kind of thing.
That is indeed what I meant.

Personally, I can't stand the term, as it's almost exclusively used derogatorily, and attempts to dismiss an entire genre outright while not offering an explanation or deeper exploration of the value these games may have.
Agreed I should have used quotes for the term. Like I said these games are not necessarily my cup of tea, but I still respect them for trying new things and treading new grounds (even if it's just in terms of story themes and not gameplay). Gaming is a large world. There's room for everything. From mindless multi-player games to artsy walking simulators.
You can't deny the appeal of something like firewatch for example. It's certainly fresh.

.
But not Immersive sims, first person platforming, actual RPGs, actual stealth games, shooters that aren't multiplayer-focused, gameplay that isn't mindless or "non" and so on...
Nameless Voice on 16/12/2015 at 15:25
There's room for them, they still get made, they just aren't as common as others.

It's an interesting contradiction to hear the games many considered to be overly gamey referred to as non-games.

But not Immersive sims
Dishonored, TES/Bethesbryo Fallout, Penumbra/Amnesia (the good one)/SOMA, Gone Home, STALKER, Far Cry 2, Consortium, Bioshock (yep), Miasmata

first person platforming
Mirror's Edge, Penumbra/Amnesia/SOMA to some extent, Dying Light, FUCKING PORTAL, Talos Principle
Pillars Of Eternity, Torment Tides Of Numenera, Wasteland 2, Shadowrun Returns, Divinity Original Sin, since we're being all "omg the 90's" Legend Of Grimrock, a million action RPG's that people would have had no problem considering RPG's 20-25 years ago
Quote:
actual stealth games
Deus Ex 3/4, Thief, Metal Gear Solid V, Far Cry stick-a-number-on, Arkham whatever, Hitman, Alien Isolation, Neon Struct, Invisible Inc, Mark Of The Ninja, Solarix, Stealth Bastard, Republique, Styx, Sir You Are Being Hunted, Burial At Sea Ep 2, Monaco, Gunpoint, Ronin, blah blah blah

Jason Moyer, let me plant a big wet friendly kiss on your forehead.

You consider those not dumbed down, minus some exceptions (as always)? Cute, you even listed Thi4f, Bioshock & Bioshock: Infinite DLC.
