Nah they're not.

Not respectable? What a shame.

I've definitely intruded in a long-time home to many, I recognize that. I'll take some steps back. I'm mellowed. You're a respectable bunch personal attacks aside (though probably deserved), and therefor worth it.
As for my arguments presented as inflexible, try to flex them regardless of what I say, if you can ;)
Try not to dismiss people that don't agree with you as a bunch of whiners and you'll do fine.

Well done for picking up on a one-off fallacy in one of my posts. Hadn't You already addressed that? We just settled differences nicely there, no need to come in with the snark. Perhaps your name should be changed to "Snarker".

If you swagger into a thread basically calling anyone who disagrees with you a philistine, don't be too stunned when people dial down the friendly.
Let's start fresh yes?
GMDX Dev on 13/12/2015 at 13:31
Sure thing. It was enjoyable though, for me at least, but it can't go on. Too much clash.
I don't suppose I managed to change anyone's mind?

Actually, I was just giving feedback and advice. If you want to interpret this as a personal attack and snark, then it's your choice.

While I was never a huge fan of Xen, the rest of Half-life would have been nowhere near as good without the platforming.
The tons of environmental challenges and puzzles, combined with some competent storytelling, are what made Half-life so special.
When someone talks of System Shock 2 and platforming, I can't help but immediately think of the tooth puzzle, which I don't think anyone will argue for - it was unashamedly awful because of the technical limitations of the engine making jumping onto (moving) objects really buggy. But the other environmental challenges, climbing and jumping around are again a part of the magic.
I think that's sad. Platforming in games was hated because of buggy physics and controls (how many times you have you fallen off ladders?), but games companies just decided to take it out altogether instead of trying to solve the issues.

The entire gaming hobby benefits from their existence however, as far as consumers are concerned. The 7th hardware generation lasting for almost decade meant that our gaming PCs stayed capable for an aeon. [...]
History has pretty much repeated itself. PS4 and XB1 being based on outdated hardware specifications has been fantastic.
This is a mixed bag. Not having to upgrade your hardware constantly and a slight decrease on the importance of newer and shinier graphics has some advantages, but the harsh limitations of consoles has also stifled innovation.
The latest generations haven't been as bad, with the main limitations still being in terms of awful controls and poor UIs, but all the previous generations are responsible for things like tiny levels (DX:IW; even Dishonoured had levels split up because of console memory.)
They also result in people just "not bothering" with the visuals. Games released with only low-resolution textures because even though they had higher-resolution originals, only PCs could have used them. Low-poly character models with no high-definition option for PCs. Maybe that allows the developers to focus more on non-visual areas, but for huge AAA companies the artists are separate teams anyway.
Consoles keep the minimum specs for games in line, but they also mean that most games don't have the capability to make use of what PCs can offer in terms of higher specs, controls, etc.

GMDX - you raised some good points which would have made for great discussion if they weren't couched in a lot of passive aggression.
If a point is good, you don't need to sellotape thumb tacks on it.
Re platforming in FPP games - anyone played Dying Light?

"Actually, I was just giving feedback and advice. If you want to interpret this as a personal attack and snark, then it's your choice."
I find that unlikely, you're human and I've presumably pissed you off. Are you sure it wasn't at least a bit of both?

Modern practices in a nutshell!

The subject material is mostly the cause of that, as well as my finding of the opposing opinion to be somewhat blasphemous given the evidence. But yes, moving on...
