Really, the literary quality of games is nothing to be ashamed of. When it comes to books, you have at least a couple thousand years worth of material and lots of rare and gifted geniuses to pick and choose from. Planescape: Torment and Deus Ex probably won't be taught in schools alongside with The Picture of Dorian Gray, but that doesn't mean that no game will ever get there.

Nor does it not mean that Deus Ex is not notable in games writing/storytelling.

Among games, sure, but it should also be noted that it's a pretty low bar.

Nobody would deny it.

Deus Ex is a landmark. There's a good reason the IP is still being milked.

I mean, I really like 20th century pulp (stuff like Edgar Rice Burroughs, Jack Vance, Raymond Chandler, etc) and also genres like cyberpunk and noir that owe a great deal to pulp, but I wouldn't go around saying that they are great or profound literature -- mostly they are just entertainment, and that's also overwhelmingly what games are currently. And there's nothing wrong with it.

Anyhow, it is gameplay that makes games unique, lets not forget. If this potential future golden age is not hampered by poor writing, it damn well better also have exceptional gameplay too to qualify. Currently we're in the mindless age, which I hope we can recover from but I fear it will never happen. VR will be a big game changer but I doubt the vast majority of classic design principles will make that transition either.

What are you even talking about? Most of your posts are broad, sweeping statements about all of modern gaming just because your favourite few from the past aren't being made any more. If you have any specific games in mind that play up to trends you hate, then join the club.

You're sounding more and more like Vae.

Get some perspective via broader tastes, even genres like racing have been notably impacted. It is widespread.
I don't just have a "favorite few from the past". I have many. I'm a collector, or was until I ran out of steam because modern games.
I guess I shouldn't enter an old timer's domain and expect its inhabitants to be in touch with something like this, but the younger generation are no better because they grew up with the mindless crap.
There are websites dedicated to the mindless modern phenomenon, by the way. I'm still a little surprised so few here acknowledge such a thing exists because of your experience, but I guess you're all dad gamers and such now so don't really have much time for it.

Then get off my lawn, or I'll get my shotgun.
Seriously, you're really not endearing yourself to people here by implying their taste is poor because they're out of touch. Your communication skills leave a lot to be desired.
