Is it necessary to have 3DS Max in order to build levels with the editor, or this only necessary for advanced stuff like custom objects etc?
I don't want to spend ages downloading the editor to find that I need to purchase professional third-party tools in order to use it.

Only if you want to model things yourself. Otherwise it's not required.

No, you don't need 3ds Max to make your own levels. All you need is included in the zip.
If you want to create new static meshes, however, you'll need 3ds Max 5.1 (not sure if it works with other versions).

...which presumably you need to purchase, as there is no "stripped-down" version provided with the editor release?

Is there any other way to build static meshes other than 3dsMax? How much of the levels is builded by using static meshes, 70%?

Max 6 can't load any of the plugins or anything that come in the Utilities/Max folder. Just a load of errors on startup.
Hopefully someone will be able to convert them over for later versions of max.

Unfortunately, I suspect they'll need recompiling for different versions. Unless the source code is forthcoming I doubt there's any way around it.

Theres the possibility you could use Milkshape 3D and then export to a 3ds format. Milkshape is a bit simplistic compared to 3dsmax but is only $25 dollars.

Anim8or is free and can export 3ds files. Are you saying those would do? I thought the files that are needed are some sort of specific 3dsMax files that Anim8or couldn't do. Would one need a converter to get a 3ds file to the correct format (unless 3ds is the correct format)?
