Wow... I didn't know that. You could always pick up a chair or other medium-sized object and throw it up into the air and have it land on the barrel, thus detonating it. :) I'm pretty sure that would work, because I've killed myself with nothing but a chair before. I just kept throwing it up and having it land on my head (yeah... I was bored). I've also used objects to provoke AIs and get them to attack me in the same manor.

Bear in mind that some things can be 'supporting actors' and others can't: crates, for example, clearly can (you can stack stuff on them), whereas, say... computer terminals can't (things thrown on top of them jiggle around until they fall off).
Pawns (player and NPCs) are not supporting actors, and also will take damage based on the downward velocity component of the 'thing hitting them', and its mass (so a heavy crate will kill you just through the multiple tiny bounces it does while it tries to fall off), whereas a beer bottle will simply fall off without hurting you.
With crates and barrels, things that can support actors, you'll only get the first hit doing damage, coz after that they'll just..stay there (no bouncing).
So if you DO want to blow something up by dropping things on it, make sure they're heavy and falling fast.
And to be honest, it may well designate you as the instigator just from throwing it (I'll have to check).

Solution to the Castle Clinton massacre:
Your kick yourselves for not realising this, i did. All you have to do is get there before Anna & close the doors.

Been playing FarCry a lot lately & it gave me the idea of distracting the enemies by throwing lockpicks etc, the enemy will come to investigate & not set any alarms/shoot until they see you. eg. The Ton Hotel hostages, as soon as the terrorists upstairs become aware of you they start shooting, just draw them into Pauls flat & pop em' on the head. Also noticed that if you have no kills until here Paul leaves his BlackJack for you. Played Deus Ex i forget how many times & you always learn something new each time.

Just played through Castle Clinton again with no kills (apart from all the rats), all knockouts & this time round Paul insists there was an "Anna shooting spree", she never even fired her gun. Not one dead body.
Back on topic:
First time i played i did all kills, then when i discovered that the NSF are for the people i KO'd them & just killed Unatco & MJ12 troops after that. I do loose my temper a lot & go on a killing spree but i always reload when i cool down. If the NSF are perpared to kill you & the police & innocents then they do deserve to be shot/killed on sight & with a vengance, regardless of their purpose.

With regard to the original question: um... no.
With regard to Castle Clinton - I didn't get the massacre response, but I didn't particularly go out of my way to avoid it. I used the back entrance, did what I needed to, never went near the front door, and came back out. I thought I did hear shooting when I entered the train station by the back, but nobody mentioned anything happening...
Back to the original question again: I tend to avoid killing if I can. For some reason, in games where stealth is a viable option, I feel obligated to play by stealth and avoid killing as much as possible. And stealth is so eminently viable with the police baton and combat strength ;)

Yeah, stuff like that happened to me too. I guess it's some kind of glitch. :erg:

Dunno if it makes a difference here but i am using Shifter1.8.
The last few games i have not killed anyone (until later), only knockouts. When i get to Paul's apartment his BlackJack is on the coffeetable, even when he insists there was an "Anna shooting spree".
