I'm pretty sure Pyrian is right and nothing happens in that area unless you trigger it (directly or indirectly). I've played the game a bunch of times and I've never had any of the NSF just wander out and get shot.
It does happen.
Whether or not them getting shot by Anna causes you to have "caused the bloodbath" I'm not sure of.

I've played through in both a "kill/tranq no one" and a "kill everyone" approach, and the "kill everyone" made me feel quite uneasy, whereas the "spare everyone" felt like enough of an accomplishment and worthy cause that when it got to
Savage's daughter and I realized I couldn't free her without knocking someone out that I had such a philosophical segfault that I had to actively remind myself that it was a game and that I couldn't control the actions of the NPCs (and unfortunately she had to die or come with me to get the gate open, it was very tragic, very tragic.)
Why didn't you just shoot them without killing them until they get scared of you and run off?
Pyrian on 29/10/2008 at 07:27
It's simpler than that. The AI's don't even activate until the player can perceive that area. It's easy to test: you can sit around the dock for a half-hour, then head over to Castle Clinton and they will start fighting as you come around the corner. It's the same with the bum camp on the other side; if you follow Anna and don't look in that direction, they don't start fighting until you get there after Castle Clinton, but if you snuck a peak, they'll immediately start shooting, and you'll probably find the fight long since concluded by the time you head over.

Yeah, if you can see them, even if they're miles away, they'll jump out of stasis, but they can also jump out of stasis if you're in the area (even if you can't see them), because otherwise things like walking patrol routes would look very odd.
Of course, that does mean you have to spend the entire level making sure you're a decent distance from castle clinton...which sorta defeats the point of going into castle clinton, surely?

Without fail, at some point playing through a Deus Ex game I will randomly begin killing everyone in site. Enjoyable? Perhaps. I've never played the game with the objective of killing as few people as possible. One would think that after playing the game for 10 years I would eventually grow up. Oh well.

If you go in the back way, use stealth, and take down the NSF guys near the front door using the prod, then you can walk right out the front door without ever triggering the firefight.
I really don't think that firefight can ever happen unless you trigger it. Unless you guys are playing a different version of the game or something.

I've tried that.. I mean, I practically do that every time I play ^
But when one of those NSF dudes starts firing his gun near the entrance, UNATCO will still occasionally pop in to see what the fuss is all about. Or when NSF start investigating the area when you're being a bit too noisy and accidentally get too close to the entrance.
Still, I don't recall comming up from the underground and finding out everybody was dead already, so something must be keeping them UNATCO fellows in check until you enter the scene.

I don't see what the problem is either. I've played Deus Ex tons of times, and I almost always ghost most areas. That includes Castle Clinton. I go in the back, and go all the way up into the upper courtyard and have a little chat with the kid there. Then I go back down and out the way I came in.
I have never triggered the bloodbath response or the firefight itself by doing this. I guess you would have to alarm them first, and what self-respecting sneak does that?
I used to have a problem with the firefight starting on it's own when you approach the front doors from the outside. My advice, never go up there. There's never a reason to.

Right now, when I play the game, JC Denton is in Paris, so please don't give me any spoilers, but why does he want to join terrorists if they are real terrorists? For example, they took hostages in a subway station. How are they better than the guys who corrupted the mission of UNATCO? That's why I said that no one in the game is innocent and everyone deserves to be shot, LOL. Even bums deserve it. I mean, who likes bums? I was myself kinda close to being a bum and, as I said in another thread, I was in a homeless shelter in NYC at one time, so I came to despise that lifestyle (even if they can't choose another one).

If there was no organised repression then there would be no organised resistance and what you call "terrorism" wouldn't exist!
Bam.
