I do. No one in this life is "innocent". Everyone deserves to be killed for something.
I disagree with that, so I generally try not to kill neutrals or good guys. Baddies can say their prayers though.

Hey, let's all chip in and hire someone to kill oleg. I mean, he already admitted he deserves it, right?

I often prefer to kill as little as possible, and DX creates enough of an immersive (as much as it's a buzzword, DX is one of the games that embodies it) "read-world" that I feel strongly against slaying people I have no reservations against.
On my first play-through I tried going the non-lethal route. But in the aftermath of the raid on the NSF castle, Paul chastised me for causing a bloodbath when reality I may've killed one or two guys with environmental hazards. I stopped caring from that point on and every baddy felt my wrath.
It's a different story when playing Thief on Expert though.

At least with expert Thief you know when you screw up, as opposed diligently sedating everyone in Castle Clinton, only to find that one of the twits ran out the front door to say "Howdy!" to Navarre somewhere along the way, and you get accused of the bloodbath.
Think I've only ever managed to avoid the "bloodbath" response once, in spite of the countless times I've played.

I actually find it quite easy to avoid the bloodbath response. Except most of the time I don't
want to avoid it - shooting is fun!
But you think your experience was bad: I'm still dumfounded from my experience with the terrorists in the subway station who set off their
own explosives, and then having Alex scold me for running in shooting everywhere!
To this day, I have yet to discover how it's possible to "shoot" anyone whilst holding a combat knife...

Ask Olga Gurlukovich.

If you don't follow Anna and just go in and out the back door without ever approaching the front door, no fight is ever triggered there.

It's always possible one of the idiotic NSF will wander over and trigger Anna and co. to start shooting even if you try really hard to avoid the entire area.
The problem with that mission is that it counts any dead NSF troops as 'kills by you', unlike the first mission, where only NSF actually killed by you are counted as such (leading to amusing situations like dragging everyone over to Paul to let him slaughter them, to then be later congratulated by the very same Paul..for being such a pacifist).
The best bet, I've found, is to drag a big crate or two over to the main entrance to castle clinton and just block the doorway. That way, no matter what Anna and the troopers might want to do, they can't get inside to begin shooting. Doesn't stop them running at the crates in impotent fury, mind.

Another thing that helps is to close the bloody door before the troops see that there are any NSF hanging around. (although the randomness of AI patrol routes means that this isn't 100% effective).

I'm pretty sure Pyrian is right and nothing happens in that area unless you trigger it (directly or indirectly). I've played the game a bunch of times and I've never had any of the NSF just wander out and get shot. I'm pretty sure their locations & routes are designed to avoid that. Now, if they go running around because you alarmed them, that's a different story.

I think the point of the pacifist option is to prevent NSF casualties, not to quibble over who killed them.
