At first i didnt like it in Thief 1, he sounds smug and so annoying. But i may have been too mean on the voice actor... But i gotta ask question, whoever decided to make Karras in Thief 2 sound like Scrappy Doo had to be out of his mind. Its why i play Thief 1 and 2 in French dub. It just works better for me. Also one of the inspirations for me to learn french because it sounds so cool in this game

Also here's a tutorial if you wanna try it out yourself. I dont use this channel anymore so its not a promotion or anything. Basically i made this mod so that english speakers can play it in a different dub, and aswell get the english interface

Who in their right mind could dislike Garret because he sounds smug and arrogant. It's been discussed before but the thing that makes the character compelling is probably how standoffish but still involved he is compared to the rugged generic action hero of most games today, not to mention that even if he's saving the world he's doing it to pay his freaking rent. Even great voice actors of today are directed to be dull and generic. Russell's performance and the dev's writing makes Garret human, and that definitely includes the less likeable aspects of his personality.

all that garrett has been through i feel his attitude was a bit soft in my view, i would have been way more brutal in my ways after some of those om missions
but over all he was very good, but i think connall has a bit more of that realistic approach in his comments :)

I can only shake my head reading such blasphemy:p Garrett is like a god and everything about him is perfect, even his imperfectness.
The only 2 voices that are even better than Russell´s voice are Garrett´s german voice actors Andreas Bruckner (Thief 1) and Torsten Michaelis (Thief 2).

That is a great thread, thank you! Very interesting to see the comparisons

Is the OP trying to pick a fight? :joke:
That being said, Garrett's voice is iconic in the Thief realm. I do have to say that my constant mimicking of Father Karras's voice may have partially contributed to my divorce a few years back.:cheeky:

I'm french and tbf the dubbed version makes me cringe something fierce :p
No offence but it reminds me of poorly dubbed old anime I watched in my childhood.
The way French Karras sounds is so cliche, he is just a flat unconvincing old vilain.
Russell's Karras sounds ridicule on purpose : it greatly discredit his personality cult, the paintings portaying him and how everyone thought he was a great genious. In the end Karras is just a pathethic maniac that stole lost knowledge from an ancient civilisation and thought himself a god for it. Thief always emphisized sounds, so Karras sounds stupid and you see through him the first time you hear his voice : he is a fraud. It makes him flawed, more human, and scarier, all in all a great character. Plus it makes him funier when he threatens you.
And about Garrett I could see why anyone would find him annoying, but it's in character too, Garrett is also flawed, the wrtting and Russell's performance make him quite a compelling character. Personnally I loved his character (and the game) right from the start, and I couldn't imagine Garrett without Russell's voice.

i made it 21 seconds in top video, before i had to stop it as i don't know the language, and it did not make the game better in anyway as the subtitles appearing on screen ruins gameplay view
i would be curious to hear the apebeast in french :P and a mechbot in german :P

I thought it was unique. What would Garrett be without Stephan Russell?
