It's a work of art.

I know! Why don't you reach up in there. Get a good handfull and then finger paint with it! We could call that art too!:)

If this is art, then ANYTHING is art.
Thus the word becomes meaningless.
Dada! I think they'd say that this is among the *best* art for precisely that reason. "The faster you learn that art isn't for your bourgeois petty viewing pleasure the better." (I don't really believe that's what Hirst was thinking, but that's what they might say about it whether he was or not ... for the cause.)
Anyway, many of his pieces are visually striking and people talk about them (at least when they were still a fresh idea; I can admit the spoof is wearing thin). Most artists can only dream of people recognizing their work at that kind of level. Opportunist or not, he's done exactly what he evidently set out to do. I don't think he has any reason to regret his moment in the sun. He just has to live under the shadow of some critics yawning at him ... which if he's leaving his own exhibition openings to watch football matches he probably doesn't care about, or any one's opinions for that matter.

I think the piece has a haunting beauty. It's art for sure. Or am I just saying that because I love maggots and corpses in general?
Fuck's sake, I love when one of these "Is it art?" threads appear on here, if only to see what the philistines have to say.

Simple rule of thumb-- If the description contains either the words "performance" or "installation", then it's most likely not art.
aguywhoplaysthief on 22/6/2006 at 16:15
What exactly is sick about this?
It's a dead animal in a piece of art. Big shit.
Dead animals pervade our entire existence; why does it being in a piece of art somehow make it sick? I don't understand. It's not like they're showing it jacking off or something.

Why?

ITT we attempt to assert that the set "art" should axiomatically be a subset of the set "things I personally want to see" rather than just accepting that there's some shit our tiny middle-class minds don't get

I want Zylonbane to give his definition of art.
Preferably, in the form of mime.

Wow, AGWPT is making more sense than almost anyone else here. This, like, throws my whole universe out of balance.
