I really don't get it, every available texture pack I can find is 800+mb with textures likely 10-20 times the res of the originals. Every single one cuts the framerate to well below 60fps, even on high end hardware (Core I5 4670k, Gtx 980, 16gb ram). Hd mod even adds a multitude of new graphical effects that cut performance even further. Improving the graphics is all well and good, but the engine just wasn't designed to handle loading in 10x the amount of texture resolution, nor to render advanced graphical fx without harnessing the capabilities of modern gpu based shading. Surely there is some middle ground to be found here? Even if we cut the size of these packs in half or 1/3, the textures would be magnitudes sharper and allow us to enjoy a high framerate as well? The only way to get a stable high framerate with these massive texture packs is likely via the use of a ramdisk, for anyone who would like a more immediate solution and has vast amounts of spare ram and patience.

Which texture packs have you installed? There are some older packs that aren't optimized well, with big (png) textures and the like. Avoid those. But there are also low res texture packs.
I doubt that ramdisk will help in this case, but there's already Large Address Aware in the NewDark zip (EnableLAA.exe, just draw Thief2.exe over it). Maybe this will help.

Check the Task Manager. How much RAM does Thief2.exe take?
Also disable mutlisampling in cam_ext.cfg

The Enhancement Pack 2 is completely faithful to the original textures and tends not to have huge textures unless they are warranted. I have no problems playing with it enabled - I usually play most FMs with it, but haven't even ever installed any of the other packs.

That's how business goes. You've got to respect authority!© Salesman's way of thinking: "If one's buying $500 v/c AND my product and sees 300fps -> he understands that my stuff is low-end, so let's do it hard way".

if you are not getting full 60 fps with EP2 or NecroAge with those specs, then you have some problem going on.

My bad, I was mistaking high input lag with default settings, for low fps :p I normally play with Nvidia Fast Sync mode enabled globally for minimal input lag with vsync, and NewDarks ini's were overriding it. Necroage isn't actually bad for performance at all. HDmod on the other hand was definitely pushing fx that the engine can't handle last I checked, but the problem there is that anything other than shader based fx is likely very poorly optimized, even with Newdark, as graphical fx are likely taking place on a single cpu core rather than utilizing modern gpus.
I tried Ep2 and it's honestly very far from comprehensive, still plenty of untouched textures flying around. To be fair though isn't Ep2 aimed more at Thief 2? Hdmod also seems to be aimed more at a Thief 2 look, the only thing that provides that gritty Thief Gold feel seems to be Necroage.

It's supposed to cover both, but it has more Thief 2 textures than Thief 1 ones because that's what the contributors made more of.

Lurker figures out this one trick to play thief at 60 fps - texture pack creators hate him!

There is something hilarious about Thief 2 chugging on a PC that can ultra Witcher 3 just fine, it must be said :laff:

there is not, actually - you'll be running into the same issues when running W3 on a new computer ten years from now on using a 19200*10800 resolution (or whatever will be considered standard at that point).
