Yes, fluorescent tubes contain mercury. It's really not a problem unless somebody drops one, though.

Ever seen how some places dispose of the tubes by driving a nail into one end of the tube through the metal to release the gas and keep it from exploding when shattered? I was told to do that to five tubes, after I was shown how on a couple of them. Naturally, my face was above the end of the tube when I set the nail and hammer-tapped it in. The gas--along with any other substance suspended in it--hissed up and out. I did this in a storage room. I probably get more mercury from the metal amalgamate fillings in my teeth, though, but in addition to fluorescent tubes--and the three or four mercury thermometers that were dropped at home, and the mercury-bead maze puzzles in my childhood. I wonder how much lead was in the paint and glazed ceramics....:eww:
