But there are also people who find the first part better.
Just for the understanding and the story, you should play it from the beginning. :3

Started with t2 because i have limited time with videogames. So I just picked what i heard to be the best in the series.
You chose... poorly.

It's true that some prefer the first (myself included, which was partly why I asked the question) and some prefer the second, and it's likely true that the game you played first factors into that (as, relatively speaking, the two games do have some notable differences). If you're only a handful of missions into Thief 2, I would genuinely encourage you to set it aside and fire up The Dark Project and see how you enjoy the first few missions of that. If you're digging TDP, then definitely carry on with that one before returning to Thief 2.

I started with T1 and it was one of the best PC game experiences I had had. Then played T2 and didn't like it that much for some reason. Also missed the undead and weirdness and Hammerites.
However my second playthrough of T2 about two yearss later was another one of my greatest PC game experiences of all time.
Hopefully, whichever order the games are played, you'll get at least one top ten experience out of it :)

Did i, now? I just heard thief 2 was a big enhancement over the first with added features. So i decided to start with that.

Im on mission 4 right now, trying to firgure my way out through this city maze. I like what im pmaying for now, and as i said, ive got limited time for games. Didnt know that the first games story would beat out the second by that far.

You can finish both of these games over a long weekend. It's not like you're playing Skyrim.

Im playing the thief games for the first time even though i knew about it for years. Im playing thief 2 and i like it alot ao far.
But i took alot of time to complete the first two missions. Like, ALOT.
4 Hours 58 minutes 23 seconds for mission 2. Adding in the (maybe) dozens of loads, im going to say double that.
Not like i truly care, as im going to enjoy playing through this game regardless, but is that just too mich time for a mission? I feel really inefficient and bumbling at this game.
The best advice I can give you as a later newcomer is to not rush, be observant and try to methodically "clear" a room or hallway first. (Put out the lights, blackjack the guards, etc.). As you gain more experience, you can bother with trying to be super-sneaky (ghosting), without incapacitating guards, and so on. But first learn the overall ropes, certainly. If you're low on arrows, especially ones useful in a particular mission, try to save them for later, but don't hesitate to use them in a clearly tough spot. (Concerning equipment, you can think of
Thief as a bit of a puzzle game in addition to stealth. Your gear can modify parts of the environment, you just have to think it over where and when is the most opportune use.)
Concerning the movement control mechanics, you can never have enough leaning from behind corners, with the two leaning keys (should be Q and E, right above WASD, unless you've remapped them). Since you're playing
Thief II, the Scouting Orb is a fairly excellent gadget to spy on guards and civilians from an area which is hard to comfortable lean from without being spotted.
I can certainly see how the second mission took you a while, it's pretty big and with loads of extra stuff for just the second mission. There will be a few more expansive ones in the second game, but much of the earlier missions are a lot less "got to explore it all" and a bit more straightforward, even if you have to do a lot of exploration. For example, the police station mission (coming up) won't feel as long-winded and potentially as drab and samey as the warehouse mission, especially if you want to complete all the goals and find all the loot. At least you'll have a much more visually varied and even exciting mission to look forward to. Later in the story, there's also a really cool bank mission, which is real heist masterpiece.

I greatly prefer Thief 2 for pretty much everything (setting, better graphics, more equipment like scouting orbs and flares, way, way more interesting levels, more urban areas taffing, including all the mansion missions, less zombie-filled horror themes, which made me quit the first game at some point because i'm a chicken (yes i know i should give it another chance))
But honestly... that's just me and saying that someone choose poorly is nonsense when it comes to something subjective like this. They don't necessarily have the same taste.
