Im playing the thief games for the first time even though i knew about it for years. Im playing thief 2 and i like it alot ao far.
But i took alot of time to complete the first two missions. Like, ALOT.
4 Hours 58 minutes 23 seconds for mission 2. Adding in the (maybe) dozens of loads, im going to say double that.
Not like i truly care, as im going to enjoy playing through this game regardless, but is that just too mich time for a mission? I feel really inefficient and bumbling at this game.

Do not rush! Each level has its own architecture that you first have to get to know. Then it will be easier.
Use the search function in the forum, if you do not get further. The quickest way is to search for walkthroughs. Since some people have already made a lot of effort and created PDFs.

Trust. I take my time in this game. Even to a point of backtracking through rooms or areas i know i've combed through.
Just trying to know what the standard time to play through the mission is.
Ill look through a guide if i get stuck. I was proud to know found most of mission 2's 14 secrets by myself.
But i restarted soooo many times.
Ill get used to it, rhough.

There's no "standard" time! :D
Every player has his/her playing style. Some like to rush and tear everything apart. Others are a tad more subtle and stealthy.
As for me, I'm in the middle style, depending of my mood. Generally, i use the blackjack than the sword. I use the sword against the undead, they are... dead anyway.

You lucky thing! I would love to be playigng for the first time again. Take your time. Enjoy it. Exploring and searching for loot and secrets; not knowing what you're going to find around that corner; opening books and listening to conversations; learning about the lives and secrets of the inhabitants of the City. That's all what makes it so damn good. Don't use a walkthrough unless you really have to. You can always look online for the secrets and loot you missed after you've had one run through.
Have fun!

I'm curious -- is there some reason why you didn't start with The Dark Project? As it is, you're not experiencing the story in chronological order...

I didn't, either. The free demo I first came across was for T2, so that is where I started. Because of that I much prefer it to T1 which seems too unreal in comparison. (The mission I like least in T2 is Trail of Blood.)
I can understand why people who started with T1 prefer that. The first exposure to the game is the one that counts.

I also started with Thief 2 (or, more accurately, with the "Life of the Party" demo, then the full game) and prefer it, but by the end of it I simply needed more Thief and was happy to play the first one, even if there are many things I liked better about the second one. I don't think it ruined anything for me.

Started with t2 because i have limited time with videogames. So I just picked what i heard to be the best in the series.
