I sincerely apologize if my post came off as being dickish. Your query didn't deserve the attitude and my response wasn't really directed at you, personally.
I think I've developed an unhealthy cynicism in this area. Niche communities thinking they're special ("We're so rare... those other people,
they don't get it. But us?
We get it"), finding each other online, and then growing in power and righteousness, has at least partly led to the sociopolitical hellscape that is 2025.
Plus, by now it should be some kind of universal humility rule for appreciating what exists in all media at this point:
Just because I don't know about it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.I've accumulated a fair number of eyeroll-inducing experiences when I've wandered into various niche gaming communities. Everyone thinks they're rare, and they place some significant value on that rarity.
I wish people would just enjoy what they enjoy without manifesting some personal or collective ego about it.
No sweat, I've developed an unhealthy cynicism about practically everything =)

I've reached a strange age where a lot of the people my age haven't really been into video games, because they were much more limited when I was young and also a whole new generation has grown up that hasn't necessarily had much exposure to games from the last century. So I never make the assumption that somebody necessarily knows about [insert incredibly obvious video game knowledge]. For example, I know so many people who have either heard of Doom or maybe even played it a fair bit when they were younger, but would never even guess there are mods for it, because the internet and access to that information was far more limited back when they played it.
Of course, on this forum you can pretty safely assume people here are more than average knowledgeable about games, but even then some information is not necessarily known to everyone. I take an active interest in games and I didn't know there was an active Tomb Raider FM scene until a few years ago. Tomb Raider for me was just a game I played on a rented Playstation some 20 years ago. I had no idea there was even a level editor.

Gothic 1 & 2 (2001, 2002) has a very large and extremely dedicated international community around it. The Russian and German communities have done extensive modding not only with the original plots, but many spin offs and total conversions. The Russian community has done considerable work with modernizing & expanding the game engines functionally.
Might & Magic has a small but active community around the Might and Magic 6, 7, 8 Merge mod. It's quite fun to play as a veteran of M&M series.

I just recently discovered that there is also a community that is still actively developing mods for Return to Castle Wolfenstein. There are others as well - Anstoss 3 still is a very popular football manager here in Germany and there are still many users who develop editor packages for all the teams and countries included in the game for each new season (which is quite the task since there are hundreds of thousands of football players and their stats that need to be updated each time). Last time I checked (though this was several years ago), there were still up-to-date servers available for the racing sim GTR2.

One of my favorite Youtuber's (Ross's Game Dungeon) just recently made a commentary video on Gothic 1. Funny thing is, like you mention that there is a large German community still active, though I (being German myself) had never really heard of the game before this. AFAIK it is particularly popular in the coal mining regions (Ruhrgebiet) of Germany.

I could name a bunch of others, but I don't think there's any point to it.
Sorry, kind of late to the party here, but I think that was actually the
entire point to the thread.
Would be interested to hear about some of these others.

StarCraft, probably the longest-running e-sport, has a huge community and regular tournaments.

the different metroid games have very different but very active communities... there are whole original and really good campaigns made for different entries in the series... like for the super NES super metroid or for the gameboy advanced metroids... i especially like the super metroid generation of mods...
there's also whole communities making custom content for the old Zelda games too... they have seasonal "jams" and everything... like horror or halloween themed mini-games made for the super nes zelda (link to the past), with cool custom graphics and stuff...
funny that people make level editors and script editors that are active today for games made in the 80s... is it nostalgia or are these games really worth it?
like someone said, some of the communities are a little full of themselves... but i just read enough to find out whats good and head to the downloads...

Yes it certainly does, and I haven't posted in over 10 years. But I have played through TG/T2 many times since and am glad this forum is still here.

we are all still waiting for thief 4 to come out, we will wait until we meet the master builder
Thief 4 came out in 2014.
Bruce Artwick's Flight Simulator goes all the way back to 1979, and new versions have been released up to last year. The first version I ever played was Microsoft's second rendition around 1983 or 1984.
