Are there any games this old (excepting perhaps Dwarf Fortress) that still generate this kind of enduring enthusiasm? Just curious. I regularly see 125+ logged-in users in the Fan Missions sub.

Tomb Raider still has a small but enthusiastic FM creator community. Other than that, Doom is one of the big ones that absolutely dwarfs any other old game. Oh, and Morrowind is a slightly newer game that still has plenty of new stuff coming out.

Everyone in a niche community thinks they're rare and special, but there are a bunch of old games with large and active followings.
It's just close to impossible for any one person to know about them all, much less care about even half of them.
Specifically, games like Doom and Quake are older than Thief and have much larger and much more active communities. I could name a bunch of others, but I don't think there's any point to it.
I'm just happy Thief is one of those enduring games and communities.

Doom (& its derivatives) & Tomb Raider (IIRC TR4 was the most FM-heavy one) are what I thought of as well.
I think people are still making Halflife 1&2 maps too.
Morrowind, Skyrim isn't that old but still, Deadly Rooms of Death maps... Well once you're talking about DROD, there are heaps of small games with fan maps like that that are still going strong. There are over a dozen oldschool wargames that allow fan scenarios with maps still coming out. The Interactive Fiction, point & click, & visual novel scenes going back to the mid-to late-1980s are still going.
One thing that I think makes Thief & our FMs still special among the classics is it really hit the sweet spot between uniting great storytelling with great gameplay. Most genres are either one or the other and can't combine both well.

I sincerely apologize if my post came off as being dickish. Your query didn't deserve the attitude and my response wasn't really directed at you, personally.
I think I've developed an unhealthy cynicism in this area. Niche communities thinking they're special ("We're so rare... those other people,
they don't get it. But us?
We get it"), finding each other online, and then growing in power and righteousness, has at least partly led to the sociopolitical hellscape that is 2025.
Plus, by now it should be some kind of universal humility rule for appreciating what exists in all media at this point:
Just because I don't know about it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.I've accumulated a fair number of eyeroll-inducing experiences when I've wandered into various niche gaming communities. Everyone thinks they're rare, and they place some significant value on that rarity.
I wish people would just enjoy what they enjoy without manifesting some personal or collective ego about it.

Are you going to list any of these hipster communes, or are we not cool enough to know about them?
I dipped my toe into Civilization 4 mods recently. There seems to be a good amount of activity there. I recommend Realism Invictus for historicity, intuitive complexity, and tasteful leader portraits.
