Huh. I just assumed it was called
District 9 because they thought it sounded cool or for whatever other random reason.
Of course I suppose that film might have been referencing that particular incident as well.
I'll tell you a secret; I hadn't even looked at the Wiki piece on this film, which mentions District 6, and I knew. I didn't think of it before I knew the film was set in SA though. The title is definitely referencing District 6 though the film probably has nothing to do with District 6 plot-wise. I was just wondering if anyone else though "District 9? Set in SA? About 'aliens'? Ahhh, referencing District 6 then" is all. Like I said; mention it to a South African (there are some on this board) and see what they say.
Of course Zylon has sucked the life out of the thread by now so...

Reviews I've read indicate that the humor and politics tend to get run-over by everything exploding. Pretty much what I feared:(

Heaven forfend there should be any action in a movie. But then when you say 'a blow-em-up action movie, ala Children of Men.' it does more than enough to indicate that you're unable to differentiate between an Action Movie, and a movie that has action in it.
District 9 is fantastic, by the way. There are some people calling it one of the greatest science fiction films of the decade, and I'm hard put to disagree.

I saw it today and yup, it was fucking good times.
My only gripe is that it dragged on a bit towards the end.

I agree 100% with your comment about Children of Men (really phenomenal film), but you do have to admit that District 9 verges on action flick towards the end.
Don't get me wrong, I think it was completely necessary to fit in the pacing and I love it more because of it, but I thought it was obvious that they decided to have a bit of fun in the last quarter of the movie and, basically, THROW RIDICULOUS AMOUNTS OF SHIT TOGETHER for a crazy action sequence.

Way to quote out of context. I said that
Children of Men starts off as a pretty thoughtful film and descends towards blow-em-up action at the end, not that it was wholeheartedly an "action film." You're welcome to disagree with my assertion, but let's be clear about what it was.
Mind you, I still think it's a good movie, just felt that it could have been so much more.

Except it stays thoughtful and extremely well done the whole time. You might as well say Apocalypse Now starts out as an interesting meditation on drunkenness and boat travel, but descends into a meaningless light show via an excursion into the Vietnam war (there's probably fans of the book who feel this way).

I must say I was not surprised that I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. There were special effects but they weren't overdone and didn't take away from the story, which I liked. Also, the guy that played Wikes seemed believable throughout the whole movie, Will Smith could take an acting lesson or 12 from him.
There were a few things I could have done without, but overall I'd say the movie was a solid 7 out of 10.

The problems with your assertion are that you're ignoring the context of the 'blow-em-up action' and the characters' (specifically Theo) relationship with it (here's a hypothetical: If you took the last thirty minutes of Children of Men by itself and called it a short film, would that film be an action film?), and that the mere existence of action cheapens the film as a whole. Children of Men (the film, I haven't read the book) without the uprising loses almost all of it's meaning, and just becomes a road movie with a race relation message.

Slightly more so than Children of Men, but the entire running time of the movie up to that point is about moving the pieces into place that make the final sequence inevitable. The movie wouldn't work without it.
