I dunno.
This looks good. The setting is certainly interesting and Alive in Joburg is nicely done. But its a liiiiiittle too apartheid for me. There is something a little to political and yet weak about this pseudo-analogy. I still see this for sure, but I'm really not sure how well its all going to gel.
As to "getting over" apartheid "already" - you guys clearly don't get it. The ramifications still exist and to a far greater extent than you realise (from the offhand way people are saying "get over it"). It's going to be another 20 years before anyone will be able to confidently say that problem X in SA doesn't have some root in the old system. I'm not one for lamenting the past ad nauseum but 20 years isn't a long time for something like this to heal and be forgotten.

I'm sorry, but until you've lived in Idaho you can't really consider your perspective on this situation complete.

You can be as trite as you like but it doesn't change the fact.

Thanks for pretty much reiterating my point in the first paragraph. It's a completely nonsensical analogy which the director is obviously just shoehorning in in order score political points and so people will think he has something profound to say.
As for your second paragraph: please explain to me how constantly talking about issues such as apartheid and slavery in of themselves help race relations. You can say that they need to be discussed in the context of their continuing ramifications (affirmative action, etc), as I mentioned before, but this guy obviously isn't doing that. All he's saying is "apartheid is bad", which, as I said before, I thought was pretty settled.

Oh, your biting sarcasm is so perceptive.
You're right, I better move eight miles away to Washington so my opinions on foreign social issues will carry much more weight in internet forum discussions.

I don't know that I agree with the "just shoehorning" take on it. I think the setting is much more interesting than if it were in the USA or UK or elsewhere in Western Europe. But yeah, its a weird juxtaposition.
And I didn't suggest talking about things would ease race relations. My entire point was - don't say "get over" when people can't for good reason. That's all.

He nailed both usages incorrectly. I'm impressed.
