Hey all,
well just as I'm about to order a new video card, my display seems to have finally gone haywire after 4-5 years. I have a 9800 GT on Windows Vista 64-Bit.
Last night, my screen froze and I had to hit the power bar.
Then today, my computer has these vertical lines that are yellow when the backdrop is white and blue when the backdrop is dark. I tried changing video drivers, to no avail.
I can't change the resolution to 1440 x 900, the native resolution of this 19" monitor. Nor can I put the computer in sleep mode. When I open Nvidia Control Panel, I get the message "You are not currently using a display attached to an Nvidia GPU."
Does it sound like the GPU is fried? I opened the tower a few days ago and blew out a bit of dust. Could it be related to that? Nothing like this has ever happened before. Any insights would be appreciated.

would be nice if you could test it in another pc, but if I had to make a guess, yeah, the card is probably (half) dead.
there is a tiny chance that some dust got into the slot and it's causing this, you can try to pull the card out, blow away the dust, and reseat it again, but I would be surprised if that actually worked.

What voodoo47 said, re-seat the video card and make sure power supply connection is proper.
Only way to be sure is to swap parts and find the problem. An extra computer and monitor would be handy. Its either the monitor or video card.
Take out the card and blow it again with a can of compressed air, inside computer too. Re-seat it, attach power cords, turn it on. Pray. ;)

Thank you, gentlemen.

Prayers can sometimes be answered. This happened to me about 6 months ago. I don't think I did a lot, maybe a bit of a shake and a clean, and after a few days it was fine and it's been good as gold ever since. So don't give up on it too soon.
