Each main Deus Ex game has better graphics than the last, but I feel the leap between DX:IW and DX:HR was the most meaningful to me. DX:MD is definitely a lot prettier than DX:HR, but... It seems like it's past the point of diminishing returns. To me.

If we're not there yet, it's not far off.
The jump from the last generation to the current one was big enough to be noticeable, but it wasn't this great, gigantic leap in quality like what we had in the past. Everything was a little more vivid, a little more detailed, a little better lit, but you can't say it made what came immediately before look like absolute garbage in comparison. It's just finer, a bit more realistic.
I imagine that the jump from this generation to the next probably won't even be as great as this one.

That sounds great.
I was rather disappointed when I investigated UE4 and saw that its sound system is significantly less advanced than Thief's, from almost 20 years ago. I really hope they make some progress in that direction soon - proper sound propagation seems to have been almost completely overlooked in modern engines.

Is that true? I'd be curious to know in what ways specifically. Maybe this is why I still play so much Thief.

The few movies about DS2 I've seen so far, all make heavy use of the Blink ability. I hated Blink in DS1. Do you think it is feasible to play DS2 without using Blink ?
Not like: is it possible to play Dark Souls games with a naked lvl1 deprived character without any upgrades ? Sure, some people can do that, but not me. Same thing here. Not is it possible, but is it feasible for an average gamer to play the whole game without using Blink ? I wouldn't mind a few exceptions, like using Blink 1 or 2 times in each level. But heavy use of Blink turns the game into a super-hero game, in stead of a Thief-like game.

There is an option, playing as Emily, where at the start you can decide not to use any magic powers for the entire game, so I'm guessing it's possible.

Yeah, you can. If you play as Emily, you have the choice not to take the Outsiders mark, giving you no powers whatsoever.

That's interesting but hmm... for some reason it didn't impress me? Not that the tech isn't great but it's not quite the some "WOW" or "this is so much more immersive" I expected. Granted, a lot of audio is very subconscious, but it did make me wonder if this tech would really make much of a difference.
Perhaps it was just utter lack of context - it's just empty halls with sound boxes. Perhaps if I was actually fighting some enemies, sneaking around avoiding monsters, or listening for enemy patrols, it would register more significantly?

As far as I could tell, UE4 has no sound propagation at all. Sounds are purely linear, pass through walls as if they aren't there, etc. - and in fact this is true of most games, even now.
I did see some tech demos (including one which was for sale on the market) that had some limited propagation set up using Blueprints and manual raycasts, but it's nothing built into the engine.
(We could probably split this out into a separate thread about sound propagation)

Don't go using DS1 and DS2 for Dishonored! That's just too confusing, especially when you're discussing Dark Souls in the same post. Maybe DH?
Anyway, I didn't think Blink was really necessary in Dishonored 1 unless you're trying to basically Ghost it? Hell of a lot more convenient, yes, but necessary to play the game (not counting the section where it's introduced and can literally only be navigated with it)?
