OK, for those of you who live in a cave on Mars and haven't heard about this show, SEE IT NOW!
This is, without any doubt, the single coolest nature show/series ever. 5 years worth of footage of the most extreme places on the planet showing stuff never filmed before. The things they show defy belief and you get chills of awe every minute.
They've shown 3 episodes already, and they're running 2 more each Sunday until all 11 are show. If you miss some, be assured that it'll be rerun (also on Discovery Science channel).
SEE IT NOW!

Is this the one they cut David Attenborough's commentary and replaced it with Sigourney Weaver for the version broadcast in America?
Regardless it is fantastic, I own the set on DVD and am pleased to see that it was recorded in HD and that there is an HD-DVD set on the way, which should look mindblowing.

Really?
Yeah, I guess that's the one. Didn't realize they swapped narrators.

I loved Blue Planet, so I'll probably love Planet Earth - which I've got ahold of recently to see.
Fuck those American assholes, Sigourney Weaver doesn't have shit on Attenborough. The man probably narrated his own conception and birth for fuck's sake.

One of the top 5 lines from this past drunken, debaucherous weekend in Atlantic City for my friend Alex's bachelor party:

(in your best drunken slur) "haaaaavvvve you seeen Plllaaaaneeet Eaaaarf on Dissssscovery Cahnnnel? - It'ssss nutsssss sssome guy waited ina duhmpster for two days to fhilm the shnow libra"
We all know how elusive those snow libras are.

Heretics!
And I thought the Americans (
http://arts.guardian.co.uk/filmandmusic/story/0,,2038883,00.html) loved the British accent. We have been lied too :(
Planet Earth is unbelievably cool though - the perfect hangover cure. The episode in the North Pole with the penguins - I felt so evil laughing at the orphaned penguins being chased by the pack of wannabe-adoptive mothers.
By far the worst episode is the jungle insects though - those spores growing out of the ants head? I felt physically sick.. it didn't help I'd had a cuppa of 'shroom tea before though.

So far, episode 3 is my favorite. The stuff that lives on the bottom of the ocean is just so... alien.
I wish they hadn't replaced the narration. Sigourney gets on my nerves after a while.

I received the DVD set for Christmas. I don't understand why they replaced David Attenborough's commentary though. That was done for the movie Cars too. They replaced Jeremy Piven doing the voice of Harv with Jeremy Clarkson for the UK version.
I really enjoy watching nature or natural history programs. Earth Story and Blue Planet are great. Last autumn I got hooked on watching two other shows, British Isles: A Natural History and the Coast series (I prefer Nicholas Crane doing the main presentation though).

Heard about this. I have no HD to benefit, but I'll still try it. Usually I just watch stuff on DVD though.

North Pole...penguins
Ain't no penguins at the north pole.
But yeah, nature programs (sorry, programmes) always sound better when narrated by an Englishman. Sigourney's narration is rather flat and boring. If the DVD with David Attenborough's narration is available in Region 1, I might have to pick that up.
