The thing with stalker though is that medical supplies are so common and effective that it doesn't really matter how much damage you take so long as you survive. The only situation I can really see where you might load without dying would be if you wasted a load of grenades that you needed and even then I probably wouldn't bother.

Dear god, you just wrote the strategy I used to hate.
To give an example, if I got hit by an enemy once and had 98 - 99 health and 95+ armor (in Red Faction) I quick loaded because I thought I could have avoided getting hit.
The good ol' days, ah.

1. AK47 is a terrible weapon, just terrible in this game. Get it scoped or don't use it.
2. Aim for the head!!! I love it when people empty a whole clip of lead into the chest ARMOR and complain that the enemy didn't die. How about shooting him where he is NOT armored?
As for saves, don't save so often. I hardly save and my game stays consistent :D

You need one hell of an armor to survive an entire clip or an up-close shotgun blast. Either the armors in Stalker are ridiculously futuristic compared to the actual year of the game or the protection values need some tweaking.

The same rule applies: DON'T shoot the armor, go for the face :p
When people panic, they automatically go for the body. So play calmly, it's not the game's fault.

Even if you do aim at the chest, the inaccuracy of the earlier guns should send a few bullets right into the face, at least when the target is pretty far away.

Similarly, the inaccuracy of the first lot of guns makes aiming for the head a tiddle impractical at any distance. This is why the 'old shotgun in the back' routine is much more effective. At close range, the shotgun is so powerful that it doesn't really matter where you hit them.

Early in the game I hit nothing but air with the pistol, so I grabbed the shotgun, waited for the enemy to need to reload and ran towards him like crazy and blam!, he's no longer a part of the game.

Always have a powerful "Knock back" gun incase you feel physcho. I dont have stalker (hee hee) but I have many years of FPS shooters. Okay I play like this:
Turn on some music: Anything that makes you want to rip off someones head. Aha-Take on me...
Have some water: This well "freshen" you up when your feeling frusturated with the game.
Have two main weapons and a "crap lamp": One knockback and one scoped and semi automatic. I carry power house pistols in games such as the desert eagle or 50. calibur in HL2. "Crap lamps" are guns that suck but get (or light) your way. Guns like these are saved for small fights against dogs or flesh. Usually I carry a small calibur with lots of ammo. Or a powerful gun with cruddy ammo. Never use a good powerful gun for a "crap lamp".
If you can leave a fight, do it. Wasting bullets, med kits, and your time is very stupid in Stalker. If a mutant dog is attacking try to get him off. If not use your knife, or a "crap lamp".
When engaging the military always find two points. Shoot and run. Run point is behing something tall and that can cover you. Shoot is where you can run over duck behing it and shoot. In between it's best to find a "Balls" point.
Balls is where there is crap lying around that dosn't gaurd well but is more likley to be shot at. You use this point to go wild.
In this game you obviously need a storage. SO, build one.
From what I here you can pick up stuff. Well make use of that. Find a shed or house that you can go to and put your stuff in. It can also be a safe house when running from the posse of the leader you just shot.
Steal/Good: Don't always kill for stuff. If you do find your safe house and wait maybe a day in game. This provides coverage from the posse and you can go through his stuff.
(BONUS!) 300 status: Always good to experiment right?
Only use a knife through out the game. Drag dead bodies to your safe house. Then build a wall and in real life cream
"THIS IS SPAAARRTTTAAA!" Did I mention you build the wall out of dead bodies. Good.
Thats it people. My rant/guide.

Actually, looting bodies after a fight often gives you profit even when considering what you spent during it.
