If I remember correctly, the guy who stole the mail is wearing it when you kill him. I've noticed that if you leave stuff (armor/weapons/potions etc) in dead bodies, the items will disappear when the bodies vanish. So that might be what happened to your mail.
By the by, you can do the lord's mail quest without even being in the imperial guard if you go and talk to the duke after retrieving the mail. It's kind of weird though, since he calls you a "recruit" and asks you to go find his sword, but won't tell you anything else until you actually join the guard.:cheeky: Funny little loop hole.:sly: Helps you to rise many ranks very fast if you decide to join up.

Thanks to all for your help people :thumb: . I did search this forum and many other Morrowind forums and pages looking for an answer and saw that you could add ceratain things by console command, but nothing about a list of commands or where to find them. I guess it is like you said kfort, I did leave it on the guy thinking that it would be safe there. I know better know. The command that worked was: player->additem"lords_cuirass_unique"1. I would have replied sooner but getting to this page when it's working is becoming a challenge.
