Direct3D vs. revised OpenGL renderer - by ralentor

You cannot enable detail textures with S3TC textures. However, for textures that are not S3TC, detail textures work
exactly as they work in D3D or Glide. I believe this fact has confused you into believing OpenGL is inherently more blurry than D3D.
I's actually talking about
vanilla DetailTexture setting, NOT with S3TC. And please stop confusing people; DetailTexture in OpenGl is inferior both in UT and Deus Ex, with or without S3TC enabled.

But
this would confuse people.
There is no DetailTexture setting applicable with S3TC. S3TC textures simply won't take detail textures. No vanilla, no chocolate -- nada. This has nothing to do with openGL. This distinction appears to have you confused.
It is your
opinion that the DetailTexture implementation on non-S3TC textures is inferior in OpenGL. And perhaps they do look inferior on your system.
I've examined them closely on my system and for me they're virtually identical in D3D and openGL. And without visiting me here in my house in Colorado while I load and run Deus Ex, you can't prove to yourself or anyone else that they don't look identical in action on my system.
Really, man, I'm not interested in a pissing contest. :erm:
Why not let people experiment and choose what works best on their unique systems rather than try to persuade them that what works best for you must work best for them? :)

Please don't think others get confused as easily as you do.
(1) There are no S3TC textures in Deus Ex.
(2) But there is DetailTexture setting available both in Direct3d and OpenGL.
(3) DetailTexture quality in OpenGL (official or not) is clearly inferior. Deus Ex in OpenGL lacks that fine texture granularity when seen up close. This, when nvidia cards (i've both 5200 & 6800 GT) are known for better IQ & performance in OpenGL than in Direct3d.

Since
Deus Ex doesn't use S3TC, you can
enable detail texures in your DeusEx.ini opengl driver settings just as you would with D3D or Glide.

Again, this is clearly your
opinion. And I can't deny that Detail Textures in openGL look inferior
on your system.
Next time you happen to pass through the Rocky Mountains, stop on by and we'll load Deus Ex with different renderers and discuss the subtle differences in detail textures
on my system. :laff:

Please refer to the first two quotes in this post. ;)
I just read through a few of your other posts on this forum and you clearly have a habit of pompously insulting people when they don't agree with your
opinion. So I realize my discussing this matter further with you is futile and this will be my last visit to this thread.
I'm not engaging in a silly forum fight with someone behaving like a stubborn twelve-your-old. I hope your fragile ego feels appropriately inflated. :thumb:

Only that it won't look as good as it does in Direct3d.:bored:

What has this to do with the subject of this thread?! Uh.

Just post screenshots and then people can judge for themselves
Tulsidas on 27/1/2006 at 09:10
I would do that once i get back home. But how are you going to know for sure i haven't cheated? How about trying it yourself?;)

What all do you have to do to make OpenGL work properly, anyway? I got as far as the first enemy I encountered from my save before I decided that there was no way in blue hell I was going to keep playing . . .
Inline Image:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v311/TheNightTerror/shotgun.jpgRight now, I'm not sure I like the way the DirectX3D versioin is behaving, so I may want to try OpenGL and see if the shimmering textures I'm getting will go away . . .

(
http://cwdohnal.home.mindspring.com/utglr/dxglr15.zip) Latest OpenGL renderer for Deus Ex
Extract OpenGLDrv.dll to the System sub-directory. To enable DetailTextures, do as Twist said. And while you're at it, could you please post screenshots as well to confirm/refute whatever i've been jabbering along all this while? I've a feeling i may have to eat my words as i've just realized my observation is based on dxglr14, not the latest.
Maybe you'd update your drivers as well? It's amazing how many glitches that can remove sometimes.

I'm sorry, I'm really tired and not completely following the thread. :erm: Enable DetailTextures? Do you mean 32 bit textures? If so, I think they're enabled, although the main menu doesn't agree with me. And what do you want me to take screenshots of?
Honestly, I didn't see a difference. My laptop was the one having issues with DX, because my desktop ran it fine, no tweaks required, although I was forced to use a lower screen resolution due to the screen's picture getting shifted on me. I did feel the game running much smoother, though, so I think I'm going to finish up my last DX run of the day using OpenGL. This next mission always ran the slowest for me, so it couldn't hurt. And besides that, my screen resolution was so high that I couldn't read the texts easily.
