Direct3D vs. revised OpenGL renderer - by ralentor

nope.it seems like atis gamma ramp is simply broken (see (
http://cwdohnal.home.mindspring.com/utglr/otherbugs.html) here).not a big deal, all you have to do is move the ingame gamma slider a bit,and the correct gamma will be restored.this step is required every time you launch the game..

I fired up FRAPS to track my FPS, and viewing the Manhattan skyline brought me down into the lower 30s.
For some reason, my framerate seems to have improved under Direct3D and is now in the 50s when looking at the Manhattan skyline from the observation deck in the Liberty statue with the statue head visible at the bottom of the screen. The only tweak I've made was increasing the CacheSizeMegs value to 8, but I wouldn't have expected that to have made a major improvement in the framerate. Maybe it was just a temporary glitch. Either way, I'm happy now.
BTW, this game is too cool. Just got my first Aug canister at the top of the statue, and now I'm on my way to Manderley's office.

Did you raid the sunken ship first?

Sure did. Had a lot of fun getting the attention of the NSF on the North Docks and leading them to the walking turret.

Re: D3D winning hands down:
I dunno, I'm finding the openGL renderer to be amazing in comparison, if only for smoothing everything out. All the not-really-noticable-till-they're-gone jaggy edges to curved surfaces are marvelously smooth.
The only thing I've noticed is that augTarget at max level doesn't work properly anymore. Annoyingly.
(radeon 9600, XP)
I've also heard that reflections no longer work with the new OpenGL renderer? Is that true?
Dr. Dumb_lunatic on 10/1/2006 at 11:42
Nope, they work just fine. For me at least.
One other thing I spotted, though: the little greyscale snapshot you get for your savegames doesn't work with the OpenGL renderer. Still, I'm still going for the openGL, it's just....lush.

If it is eye-candy you're interested in, Direct3d wins hands down. Keep in mind that Deus Ex doesn't come with those high-res S3TC compressed textures that OpenGL in UT-GOTY can take advantage of. So, unlike Deus Ex in Direct3d and UT in either renderer, textures take a blurred look even at close range.
Direct3d in Deus Ex. OpenGL in UT. :thumb:
Tulsidas, can you explain why the textures would be blurred in OpenGL? I understand that the high-res S3TC textures are not included with Deus Ex, but wouldn't D3D and OpenGL both be using the same standard textures that are included in the game? And if so, why would they be blurred under OpenGL but not under D3D?

That's the problem I was having with UT aswell :-/
