What exactly does the attack skill do, and how is it different from the sword, mace, and axe skills? Do they each increase the chance of hitting a monster, or the damage inflicted, or both? Thanks!

Check the last page before the index in the Player's Guide for a brief description of each skill.
Attack provides a bonus to your chance to hit.
Sword (Axe, Mace) both increases your chance to hit when using such a weapon, and your chance to defend against someone else using such a weapon.
Interestingly enough Missile is different, increasing the damage you inflict with missile weapons.
For obvious reasons I would strongly suspect that you get a greater to-hit bonus for increasing a specific weapon class skill than you do for simply increasing the overall Attack skill.
I don't know whether you can successfully specialise in one class by ignoring the Attack skill altogether, though?

Thanks! Yeah I'm wondering if I should even bother with the Attack skill.. I usually just stick to one weapon type the whole game anyways.
