..that the word "Hortator" is actually Latin? Apparently it means "encourager", which fits in very nicely with the story of Mw!
Just a little titbit, don't know if you knew already. :)

Yeah, I looked it up a while back after wondering whether it was a real word, or had just been made up for the game. The actual word "Hortator" doesn't appear in my dictionary, but it has "hortative"-tending or serving to exhort. Related words given are "hortatory" and "hortation"......not too much of a jump to "Hortator", then.
There's a clear etymological link to the words "exhort" and, more obviously, "exhortative", among others.

What about horticulture? The science or art of cultivating fruits, vegetables, flowers, or ornamental plants?

Looks like there is no connection between Hortator, hortative, exhort etc, (all coming fr. Latin hortari, to urge, encourage, and etymologically related to yearn) and horticulture etc. coming fr. Latin hortus 'garden', (related to Engl. yard).
However, while looking this up, I found that horripilation* is a real word, and means goose-flesh! It is derived from Latin horrere 'to tremble, shudder, (of hair) stand on end' plus pilus 'hair'. Horrere also gives us horror, horrible etc.
Wow. You learn something every day!

It brings some interesting images to mind though. The Nerevarine on a mission to defeat Dagoth Ur by cultivating monstrous tomatos and cactus plants to hurl at him :)

And don't forget gardening impements! Oh no, that belongs in a different thread altogether...
